Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCoy-Blossom Funeral Homes & Crematory - Troy on Sep. 25, 2025.
George David Duvel passed from his earthly life into the presence of his Lord and Savior in the early morning hours of September 24, 2025. David was born January 5, 1930 just northwest of Olney to George Frederick (Pete) and Sarah Marguerite Duvel. His mother died from an illness just 17 days after his birth. David was raised primarily by his maternal grandparents, Jonathan Marshall and Mary Elizabeth Duncan on their farm near Olney. He would live in the Olney community almost his entire life. He deeply cared for his neighbors and friends and was always ready to help someone in any way he could. David attended Grimmett School and later Bowling Green High School. The story was often told of his first few days of school and how the schoolhouse door had to remain locked to prevent him from running out the door and down the road toward home. The teacher would send his cousin, Ruben Edwards, to chase him down and bring him back to school.
From a young age, David enjoyed farm life. As a child, he followed his Granddad Duncan as they walked behind the plow pulled by horses. When he wasn't following his Granddad, he was planting his own crops out behind the house with his toy trucks and tractors. He put many miles on those toys. He was active in 4-H, played on various community softball teams and he enjoyed cars. He enjoyed bowling, ice skating, gospel music and horse shoes. David's grandparents instilled in him the importance of faith in God in his life and he became a member of Olney Baptist Church. David used his servant heart to fill many roles in his church over the years. He was an active Deacon for over 60 years. He remained an active member until in his 90's. He retired from the role of janitor at the age of 90 only at his children's insistence. He faithfully served the church throughout his life, often taking care of the little things behind the scenes.
In the summer of 1948, David met the love of his life, Patty Colbert. He used his car to catch her attention driving past her and her friends several times one afternoon and eventually secured a date. They were married June 5, 1949. Anyone who knew him well knew of his immeasurable love and respect for his wife. One of his greatest desires was to always take care of her. They were blessed to share 75 years together. They had three children, Ronald Eugene, Jonathan David and Wanda Louise.
Together they would buy their own farm and work side by side in the fields or caring for the hogs. They were truly life partners in all they did. When they moved off the farm and into Olney, David worked for neighbor, Roger Mudd, helping crop farm for a few years. He then began helping his son, Johnny, build custom trailers and remained with him until the shop closed. He would later sit with Johnny each day throughout his illness. In his later years he also loved to mow grass. He would often find an excuse to mow. It was the closest thing to driving a tractor in the field he could do.
David is survived by son Ron Duvel of Newburg, daughter Wanda Duvel of Troy, Daughter-in-law Margie Duvel of Silex, grandson Jeremy (Hollie) Duvel of Troy, grandson Jeff (Heather) of Newburg, granddaughter Kelly Hanner (Jason) of Dardenne Prairie, great -grandchildren Laney Duvel, Kenzie Duvel, JT Duvel, Presley Hanner, Monroe Hanner and Gracie Duvel, his brother Tom Duvel and sisters-in-law Mary Colbert and Imogene Colbert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patty, his son Johnny, grandson Jason, his sister Norma Leslie, his daughter-in-law Melva Duvel and Brother-in-laws Albert Henry Colbert, Raymond H Colbert Jr and Michael Wayne Colbert.
Pallbearers are grandsons, Jeremy Duvel, Jeff Duvel and Jason Hanner; nephews, Steve Colbert and Dan Colbert; and cousin, Rodney Colbert.
David's legacy to his family and friends is to follow Christ, to love sacrificially, forgive often, serve others whenever you can, work hard each day, always be honest and to live a life of integrity with a gentle, quiet spirit. And that was the life he always modeled.
