George Wayne Ellena, known affectionately to friends and family as George Wayne, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan. Born on September 28, 1939, in Iron River, Michigan to the late Peter and Minnie (Vassar) Ellena, George led a rich and fulfilling life.
George graduated from the Michigan School for the Blind and began his career with General Motors in the parts division. Beyond his professional life, George was a man of many interests and talents. A master at chair caning, he breathed new life into worn pieces. His hands, so capable at work, also created magic in carpentry. George loved the Detroit Lions and he always enjoyed football season.
George's greatest joy was time spent with his family. He was always in the yard playing with his children growing up.
George was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Tony, Peter, Dominick, and Theodore Ellena, his son Todd Ellena, and a son-in-law Richard Capoccia.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Sue (Curdy) Ellena; his two children, George Wayne III (Connie) Ellena and Carol Capoccia; Ten grandchildren, Chirstina Ellena, Samantha (Joe) Head, George Wayne III Ellena, Eric Hullett, Jessica Hullett, Jeremy Hullett, Jasmine Capoccia and R.J. Capoccia. Ashley Ellena, and Justin Weadle. Daughter in Law Tammy Ellena.
A visitation will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Palmer Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel. The burial will take place Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Deepdale Memorial Park at 2:00 PM.
