George Henry Frishkorn, age 92, of Valencia PA, passed away from old age and a broken heart on Monday morning, September 2, 2024, at the St. Barnabas assisted living facility, under hospice care, following a steady decline from COVID in March. He and his wife Suzann had been living within the St. Barnabas Community since 2006.
George was born on March 26, 1932, in the Manchester District of Pittsburgh, the only child of Andrew Frishkorn and Alma Marie (Gruemken) Frishkorn. He graduated from Oliver High School in January 1950, where he played varsity basketball, was class business manager, active in the golf, physics, and Hi-Y clubs. He received a half tuition academic scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) and graduated with a B.B.A. in accounting in June 1953. He was active in the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, Pitt Players and the inter campus Lutheran Student Association, where he met his future wife, Suzann Geidel, who was attending Carnegie Tech. George and Suzann were married August 22, 1953. He attended Law School at Pitt for one year. George was inducted into the Army in August 1954, serving his country as a Special Agent in the Counterintelligence Corps in Seoul, Korea during 1955-56. Returning to Pitt, he received a master's degree in business in June 1957.
George's work experience started at an early age in grade school as a cherry picker at the Huttinger Orchards in Ross Township. He was also a duck pin boy at the Manchester Bowling Alleys and a "Soda Jerk" at Sam's Drug Store in Manchester. Entering college, he was employed by Reed, Smith, Shaw & McClay, a Pittsburgh Law Firm. Part time work at Armour Meat Packing and the H.J. Heinz factory paid for the balance of his undergraduate expenses.
In 1957, he joined B.F. Goodrich in Akron as a Job Analyst with later becoming a Systems Analyst when the first corporate computer was installed. In 1962, he returned to Pittsburgh to work for U.S. Steel Works in Duquesne which lead to joining Westinghouse in 1963 as a Business Systems Analyst in East Pittsburgh. He later became the Manager of Business Systems at the Power Circuit Division in Trafford, Pa. His final industrial experience was with Joy Manufacturing as the Director of Management Information Systems. During his time at Joy, he had responsibility for the data processing at 4 U.S. sites and plants in Canada, Scotland, and Australia. When Joy experienced a hostile acquisition, George became the Director of Information Services at Jefferson Hospital. George remained active with these professional organizations: Systems Management Association, DPMA, ACM and APICS.
George was always very social and active playing tennis, painting, being treasurer of the Village Manor Swim Club and member of the Natural Color Camera Club of Pittsburgh. He and Suzann were avid gardeners. He was a member of The Men's Garden Club of America & Dahlia Society. George was a devoted Christian and active member of Berkeley Hills Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir, taught 8th grade Sunday School, and served on council. During retirement, he was the treasurer for the Lutheran Student Center.
In later years, George worked part-time at Doubleday Books, then transferred to the Barnes & Noble store in Cranberry. This was a convenient location after moving from Shaler to the Valencia Woodlands campus of St. Barnabas. His beloved vacation spot for 25 years was the Chautauqua Institution in western New York. He absorbed their wide variety of political, religious, and social lectures, along with musical programs, theater, and art exhibits. George was an avid reader, quick witted with a joke, happy to share his opinions/debate about current world events and give more advice than one might enjoy! One of his favorite dad jokes was telling old people "The good die young."
He is survived by his children, Karen (Keith) Krueger, Andrew A (Nancy) Frishkorn, five grandchildren, Katy Reese, Matthew (Sarah) Frishkorn, Daniel (Sophia) Frishkorn, Samantha (Evan) Peters and Adam (Peyton) Krueger plus 3 great grandchildren Emma Reese, Elijah Frishkorn and Elizabeth Frishkorn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Alma Frishkorn and his wife Suzann who passed away in May 2024.
Arrangements are being completed by the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, Inc. 238 Crowe Ave. Mars, PA. Condolences are available at www.mcdonald-aeberli.com. He will be buried by his great grandfather Adam Frischkorn in the Smithfield Cemetery in the East End of Pittsburgh. A graveside service for George and Suzann will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to be made to the Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8070 Rowan Road, Cranberry Twp., Pa., 16066.
