George W. Goggans
George W. Goggans, 88, died November 6, 2024, after suffering a four-year battle with MDS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Cora Goggans; his nine siblings; and son-in-law, Pat Doman. George spent many of his early years in Cullman, Alabama. He joined the US Air Force at the age of 17 serving as a medic. After four years of service, he attended St. Bernard College in Cullman where he received his bachelor's degree. Later he enrolled at Emory University where he received his master's. George and his family moved to Florida in the 1960s, and he spent most of his career teaching English at Milton High School and the last five years of his career teaching at Blackwater STOP Camp, a facility for juvenile offenders. He loved watching Alabama football, Duke University basketball, and Atlanta Braves baseball, and enjoyed playing golf at Tanglewood Country Club. He particularly loved bow-hunting and hiking in the San Juan Mountains, Colorado.
George is survived by his wife, Emma Louise Whitfield; five children, Kathy Doman of Pensacola; Lynne Miller of Phoenix, AZ; Dianne and her husband Rob Secola of Pensacola; George Goggans, Jr., of New Orleans; and Stacey Parks and her partner Don Prather of Oakland, CA; six grandchildren, Jamie Secola and her husband Adam Davis, Henry Miller, Charles Miller, Jane Miller, Paul Miller, and Everett Doman; two great-grandsons Abram Robert Davis and Elias George Davis; and the mother of his four children, Janice Watts.
A visitation will be held at Lewis Funeral Home in Milton at 2:00 p.m with a memorial service following at 3:00 p.m., Friday, November 29, 2024. The family requests that no flowers be sent but if you desire, donating to the Arbor Day Foundation will honor George, who loved trees-identifying them, sitting in his tree stand among them, and finding peace being around them. At a later time his ashes will be scattered at a favorite place in Pagosa Springs, CO, where he and Emma Louise shared many wonderful summers.
