George Higgins, of Lake City Michigan, departed to be face to face with the Lord January 7, 2025. He passed peacefully Tuesday night at home with his family. He was 96 years old.
George (Papa) was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 19, 1928. His parents were both aerial artists in a circus who taught him to be an acrobat at an early age of 5.
He entered the Michigan State Troopers when he was 16, then the US Marine Corp at the age of 17 and served in WWII as a combat engineer in China 1944-1946.
When the war was over, he returned home and soon married Dorothy Brown. They were married for 27 years and raised their 4 children in Kalamazoo, MI.
His affection for weaponry and armament continued in Kalamazoo. Soon he began working at Miller and Boerman Sporting Goods where he eventually became part owner of the Gun Shop. He was a gunsmith the majority of his life, in the service, with his uncle, and his business. He acquired many long-term friends and customers.
In 1972 he married Joann Logan, and they opened their own gun shop called "On Target" in 1976. They later retired and moved to Lake City in 1985. Together they pursued their passion of flying.
They bought a little summer trailer that they expanded and became their home for the remainder of their lives. This home brought them so much joy!
He also was the local gunsmith and added a gun shop attached to the home. His wife Joann also got her pilot's license, and they flew their small aircraft around the state.
There were many happy memories at their home, they were constantly entertaining and loving the life they had together with family and friends.
George developed heart issues and had to stop flying. He sold the airplane and bought a 1928 Ford Model A. He loved driving it around town and entering it into the July 4 th Parades in Lake City.
He enjoyed many other hobbies! He was a photographer, a rock collector, hunter, bird watcher, carpenter, mechanic, history buff, loved music and travel. He and Joann loved to go to the Casino. After Joann passed in 2005, he continued to enjoy this passion with others.
George and Joann are survived by their children, George A Higgins (Clara), Fred Higgins, John Logan, Donna Logan (deceased Nathan Ford), Andy Logan and Amy Jennings (Lee), lots of grandchildren, great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joann Higgins, daughter, Christine Stevens (Argie) and son, Roger Higgins (Helen).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at the Community Church of Christ 6535 W, Blue Rd. (M55) Lake City, MI 49651. There will be a luncheon directly following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in George's name to the Community Church of Christ in Lake City, Michigan, where he and Joann worshiped for several years.
