George Damon Leavitt III, longtime optometrist and cherished member of the South Shore community, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025, after a short illness, with loved ones by his side. He was 87.
Born on New Year's Day, 1938, George grew up in East Bridgewater and later lived in West Bridgewater and Whitman. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College and the Massachusetts College of Optometry. A third-generation optometrist, he cared for patients in Whitman for over 50 years, continuing the family practice founded by his grandfather and later joined by his father. George carried on the legacy with compassion, dedication, and a deep connection to his community. George's commitment to helping others extended beyond the exam room. He volunteered his time supporting glaucoma patients and served on the East Bridgewater School Committee. As a member of the Lions Club, he found joy in civic service. He
was also known throughout the community as the town Santa Claus, delighting children for many holiday seasons.
He was a devoted family man, an avid reader, and a passionate Red Sox fan. For many years, he hosted unforgettable Fourth of July celebrations at his cottage in Wareham, where laughter, fireworks, and fellowship lit up the summer nights.
George is survived by his beloved wife Barbara; his sister Phoebe and brother Carl; his children Paul, Doug, Suzanne, and Jeff; and his many grandchildren and great- grandchildren, who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his former wife, Aurelia Leavitt. He was predeceased by his parents, George D. Leavitt Jr. and Thelma Leavitt;
his sister Judy; and his son Michael.
A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Halifax Fire Department, whose support and kindness in recent months were deeply appreciated by George and his family. Their dedication and compassion will not be forgotten.
