George Lochbaum Obituary

George "Jerry" Lochbaum
August 17, 1924 - January 30, 2024
George "Jerry" Lochbaum, 99, beloved Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, January 30. He always encouraged his family to keep learning, to be curious, and to be kind. He was a pillar of strength for his family, and he will be missed.
Jerry was born in 1924 in Alexandria, Louisiana to Paul and Alice Lochbaum, and grew up there and in Pennsylvania. He began college at 16, and when he was earning money for a second year, he used his college library card to continue his education. He read up one shelf, and down the other. He remained a lifelong learner, studying five languages, science, art, and history. Jerry was an award-winning journalist who worked on newspapers in Mexico and Arkansas, where he met his beloved wife Gladys, and the San Antonio Express. He was science writer, Science Editor, and Sunday Editor at the Express, and also produced "Old San Antonio: 250 Years in Pictures." Jerry won several awards including the Texas Press Association awards and the Claude Bernard Award. He then became Assistant Director of Communications at Southwest Research Institute where he remained 22 years, writing up the science and engineering research carried out for clients all over the world. He said he was happy to find they actually paid him to go around SWRI and learn what was going on.
Jerry was curious and found the world an endlessly interesting place. He learned to drive in a Model-T, yet saw men land on the moon. He enjoyed reading, music, bird watching, and politics. His mind was brilliantly sharp to the end.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Gladys. He is survived by his sister, Mary McGee; two daughters, Frieda Lively (Mike), and Patricia Rodriguez (George); four grandchildren, Angelique Richardson (Ben), Trey Lively (Shawna), Jay Rodriguez (Heather), and Sarah Hunter (Wesley), and six great-grandchildren.
The viewing will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South, 1700 SE Military, and his funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2024, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Mission Burial Park South.
