George E. Michelson, age 91, a resident of Attica, passed away on November 22, 2024. He was born on February 14, 1933, in Riga, Latvia. George immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island at age 17. He joined the Army prior to gaining U.S. citizenship and loyally served his country during the Korean War. George was a hardworking and highly skilled Tool & Die Maker often described by many as the best. He retired from GM after many years of dedicated employment. He enjoyed traveling to many beautiful places around the world with his wife Eleanor and often with lifelong friends. George loved to read books on history or other interesting subjects. He was constantly reading something, and his car was always full of magazines and books he was either picking up or returning to the library. George was also an avid chess player and played in tournaments all around the country. He was a man of deep thought and would not hold back on giving his opinion. He truly enjoyed the opportunities, blessings and good life America had given him.
In his earlier days George loved working in his vegetable garden, growing his pickling cucumbers so he could make his famous garlic water pickles which he would make everyone try. His coworkers loved them!
George is survived by his children Paul Michelson of Maple Valley, WA, Carl (Lisa) Michelson of Lapeer and Laura Michelson of Attica; grandchildren Amber (Josh) Atwood, Lindsay (Joe) Belsha, Jordan (Janae) Detwiller-Michelson, Adam (Rebecca) Michelson, and Katie (Patrick) Bannworth; great-grandchildren Zarah, Hank, Azelle, Judah, Tyler, Aaron, Isaac, Charlotte, Soren, Levi, and Walker; brother Lt. Col. Helmut Michelson.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Eleonore Michelson.
Arrangements of cremation have been entrusted to Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors Capstick Chapel in Lapeer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 1 pm at the Lapeer Community Church in Attica Michigan. A luncheon will immediately follow the service.
