George Mikkola, husband of Peggy (Miller) Mikkola, passed peacefully on December 7th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
George was born in Boston in 1943 and lived in Dorchester until his family moved to Billerica for a year (his mother's family home), then to Bedford where he attended school, graduating from Bedford High School in 1961. George went to Nasson College in Springvale, ME, where he graduated with a degree in Mathematics. He cherished his many life-long friendships from Bedford and Nasson.
Throughout his career, George worked as a computer systems consultant. George and Peggy met while living in Waltham and were married at the Martha Mary Chapel in Sudbury in 1975 before moving to Acton in 1976 where they raised their daughters, Jennifer and Amy.
George was a dedicated, supportive, and loving father and husband who enjoyed spending quality time together with his family.
George liked playing/watching tennis and cross-country skiing, as well as biking, camping, and beaching on Cape Cod with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing bridge and dinners with Peggy and their Coterie friends.
George was known by his friends for his humor, gardening skills, and great cooking. During the last 8 years he especially treasured his time as a grandfather to Emily (age 8) and Evelyn (age 5) who loved being helpful gardeners and spending time with Grandpa.
George was active at Saint Mathew's United Methodist Church in Acton.
George is survived by his wife, Peggy, daughters Jennifer (Nate) Berry and Amy Mikkola, brother Gary (Catherine) Mikkola, brother-in-law Gary (Beverly) Miller, granddaughters, Emily and Evelyn Berry, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Arne and Anna Mikkola.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in George's memory to Saint Mathew's United Methodist Church in Acton (https://saint-matthews.org/) or AccesSportAmerica (https://accessportamerica.charityproud.org/Donate).
Visiting hours will be held at the Acton Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 17, from 4:00-7:00 pm.
A celebration of life will be held at Saint Mathew's United Methodist Church in the spring of 2025.

I was just thinking tonight of friends and classmates from Bedford High School, and the first name that came to mind was George Mikkola. I graduated the year after he did, but we were in Miss Lois Blakeney's French class together, along with Kenny Johnson and Craig Keith. We all sat together and had a little too much fun, I guess, as class clowns Kenny and Craig entertained the class with exaggerated attempts at pronouncing French. Miss Blakeney was very patient with us all, one of the best teachers I ever had. We lost Craig tragically just a few years later, aged 22. I don't know what became of Kenny. I'm sorry to learn that George has left us. I can see from his photo that he never lost that mischievous look in his eyes. I remember that tall thin blond boy with the blue eyes always ready to smile and laugh. Everyone liked him. I think he had a female cousin in our school, too, whose name was Karen Ahola, I believe. So long ago now, another time, another place.
