George Papandreou Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Peterson & Patch Funeral Home on Mar. 7, 2026.
George died suddenly on Friday morning, March 6, 2026.

George was preceded in death by his father Zaharias, his mother Martha and his nephew Kosta. He is survived by his sisters, Angela and Cynthia (Jim), brother Louie (Anna), his son's Zaharias, George Jr and Alex and his beloved wife Lisa and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

At the age of 6 (1967) he and his family Immigrated to America from Logga, Messina Greece. Where they settled in Waukegan, IL. He started working in restaurants at the age of 11, where he learned to cook. Cooking was one of the things he loved to do, especially when it was for others to enjoy. He graduated from Waukegan East High School in 1979. He loved going on road trips with his friends, playing basketball until they were all in their early 30's, and then switched to golf which they all did for many years. After leaving the restaurant industry he went to work for Waukegan Public Schools and retired after 23 years of service as a Head Custodian.

He would tell you the best part of his life came when he and Lisa welcomed their sons Zaharias, George Jr and Alex into the world. Living was all about his boys and his wife and what he could do for them. Taking them to the movies, watching them grow up playing sports, participating in school plays, producing music, and trying to do everything he could to help make their dreams and desires come true. Once he retired, he started gardening which became his passion, he was the neighborhood vegetable stand that supplied his friends and neighbors with vegetables. He had his garden helpers, his beloved dogs Bruno and Buddy, and his grand-dog Heni. They loved working in the yard with him, as he always made time to play fetch with them.

He will be forever loved and missed. Services will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 1400 O'Plaine Road , Libertyville, IL 60048

Visitation 10:00 – 11:00 AM, Services 11:00 AM followed by a Graveside service at North Shore Garden of Memories in North Chicago.
