George William Paul, 92, died April 10, 2025.

George was born May 9, 1932 in Neenah, Wis. to William J. and Josephine M.(née Van Elsacker) Paul.

He graduated from Neenah High School in 1950. He attended UW Stout and in 1951 he joined the US Navy. He served his country as an aviation machinist aboard the aircraft carriers the USS Bennington and the USS Bon Homme Richard during the Korean War.

In 1954 George returned to civilian life and joined his father in business as co-owner of the Midway Tavern on Commercial Street in Neenah. At the same time, he worked for Nelson Vending/ARA Vending Services to support his growing family.

George married Anna Jeanne Beier on December 8,1956. His wife of 68 years survives him along with their children Vicki (Arthur) Saffran, Kathryn Paul (Clive Arden) and Douglas (Brenda Meden), seven grandchildren: Jessica, Tyler, Joseph, Benjamin, Reva, Shayni and Calli and 11 great-grandchildren: Ariah, Addisyn, Anthony, Madeline, Annie, Graham, Jennifer, Rory, Jacob, Jade and Léa. Survivors also include his brother William (Christine), sisters Audrey Kimbrough and Judith (Thomas) Murphy and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters Gloria (1936) and Beverly (2024).

George was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker. After he retired from ARA, he roofed barns, renovated his home and church, built furniture and clocks and turned beautiful wooden bowls and urns. George was an avid reader. He loved to hunt with friends and family and lived to tell the tales. He had a wicked sense of humor.

Our thanks to the professionals at the Heritage Center, Skallen Retirement Services and Agrace Hospice Care for their compassionate care of George and his family at the end of his life.

George was cremated. His ashes will be spread over Lake Winnebago this summer. Memorials in George's name may be sent to the Fremont American Legion Wolf River Post 391, Fremont, Wis.
