George Poumakis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Curlew Hills Memory Gardens Funeral Home on Mar. 26, 2026.
With faith and deep love, we announce the passing of George William Poumakis, who fell asleep in the Lord on March 25, 2026, Greek Independence Day, at the age of 96.

George was born on January 21, 1930, in Jersey City, New Jersey. A proud American and devoted patriot, he honorably served his country as a member of the United States Navy. Throughout his life, George exemplified dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in the promise of future generations.

A visionary in education, George founded Athenian Academy Charter School beside his late wife, Lemonia Poumakis, in 2000, establishing the first Greek immersion charter school in the United States of America. He held a lifelong passion for education and firmly believed that every American child is capable of greatness, especially when given the opportunity to learn and grow through language and culture at an early age. His legacy lives on in the countless students and families he inspired.

George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Tao Tran; his son, William George Poumakis; his daughter, Penelope (Alex) Veloudos; his cherished grandchildren, Aristides Veloudos, Vasili Veloudos, Alexis Poumakis, Alexandra Toor, and Georgio Veloudos; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Alayla Poumakis, Johnathan Toor, Jayce Becker, Koda Burnham, Aleko Veloudos, and Nicolas Toor.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lemonia Poumakis, with whom he now rests in eternal peace.

George will be remembered for his strong faith, his love for his family, and his enduring commitment to education, community, and country. May his memory be eternal.

The funeral will be held on March 30, 2026, with a viewing at 10:00am followed by church service at 11am at Saints, Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Greek Orthodox Church, 1010 Riviere Rd in Palm Harbor, Florida. 34698

We pray that our Lord grant His servant George rest among the righteous, where there is no pain, sorrow, or suffering, but life everlasting.

May his memory be eternal

George holds a special place in our hearts. He has been a connection to our Greek heritage. He was first cousins with my dad, Lou Poumakis. He joined us at a family reunion in 2009 in South Florida. It has been a joy to get to know him and the entire family!
We are so sad for your loss! May God comfort you and hold you close during this season of grief. You all are in our thoughts and prayers!
With much love,
Ed, Michelle Brill & Family.
