Mr. George Henry Richert, age 92 of Salem, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025.
Born on July 27, 1932 in Elizabeth, Indiana, George was the eldest son of the late Ora W. and Mary Elizabeth (Foreman) Richert.
Formerly of Harrison County, he was a 1951 graduate of Elizabeth High School and a resident of Washington County since 1957.
George proudly retired from Pillsbury Company in 1989 after being employed there for 28 years. Additionally, he made a great life farming the family grounds for over 68 years, raising cattle, buffalo, and tobacco crops, to name a few. He will be remembered as a hardworking outdoorsman who loved to hunt, travel, and he enjoyed auctions of all kinds.
Mr. Richert was a founding, former member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Salem, and more recently attended the New Salem First Church of God. Working his way though the ranks, he was proud of his accomplishments which started as a Cub Scout, then Boy Scout, onto Sea Scout, all while in Michigan, as well as serving as the Scoutmaster for St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lanesville, IN.
George was married on September 22, 1951; a wonderful 67 ½ years of marriage together with his wife, Sylvia Faye (Stewart) Richert, who departed him in death on April 24, 2019.
George’s humble legacy leaves behind 6 children, 4 daughters: Beverly D. (Mark) Shepherd of Salem, Brenda L. (Russ) Uphold of Louisville, KY, Valerie L. Simpson of Salem, and Dr. Judith R. Richert (Steven Brady) of Salem; 2 sons: Bradley W. Richert of Salem, and Terry D. Richert (Michelle Alexander) of Monroeville, IN, 1 brother: Roy “Roger” Richert, and 2 sisters: Patricia S. Larabee and Claudia K. Holmes. George is also survived by: 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents. 2 brothers: Dale G. Richert and Ora W. Richert Jr. “Boots” and 1 granddaughter: Rochelle.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM Thursday, April 3 at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4-8PM and Thursday from 9AM-until time of service.
Memorial contributions can be made in his honor to: New Salem First Church of God or the Beech Grove Cemetery Association.
