George L. Schaffer, 73, of Waymart died suddenly, of natural causes on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton.
Born February 18, 1952 in Doylestown, PA, he was the son of the late Dale W. and Andrea E. (Crooks) Schaffer.
On January 4, 1971, George enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly served his nation, and attained the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge in 1975. George worked for many years at the Tobyhanna Army Depot, prior to his retirement.
A staunch advocate for veterans and their families, George worked tirelessly for our men and women in uniform. He was a proud and dedicated member and officer of the Waymart American Legion Post 889.
George was instrumental in various activities throughout the community. He was a member of the Waymart Area Historical Society, and was actively involved in volunteering there.
Several years ago, George made a decision to accept an invitation to visit The Waymart Church. Ultimately, that decision would change his life for eternity. George loved his faith, and his church family. He especially enjoyed cooking every Monday for the Men’s and Women’s Night Gathering.
George could often be found at the counter of The Belmont Cafe where he enjoyed many meals and fellowship with friends.
Waymart will truly never be the same without George's friendly face shining down these streets. We are all so grateful to have had George in our lives. His memory will never be forgotten.
George is survived by his brothers and sisters: Melinda Canfield and her husband Bruce of Tunkhannock, William Stavey and his wife Eileen of Brodheadsville, Lester Schaffer of Honesdale, Elizabeth Douglas and her husband Paul of Honesdale, and Melissa Sue Hazen of Harrisburg; nieces and nephew: Jennifer Marakovits, Melissa Eileen Louy, James Rosler, Jessica Carroll, Andrea McKenna, and Amanda Neikirk; great-nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
