George L. Smith 93, a longtime resident of Whitman, died Saturday October 4 after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia "Ginny" (Parker) Smith.

Born in Brockton and raised in Whitman he was the youngest son of thirteen children of the late Frank and Mary (Hathaway) Smith, and a graduate of Whitman High School, Class of 1950.

George and his brothers worked countless hours in the family business "Smiths Dairy Farm" a well known institution in Whitman. After graduation he joined the US Air Force and was a proud Veteran of the Korean War.

In 1955 he married the love of his life Ginny and they settled in Whitman, where George was a familiar face having delivered ice cream for the former McCarthy Brothers Ice Cream. After the closing of McCarthy's George went to work for the Whitman Department of Public Works, Water Department, retiring in 1992.

George was an avid Boston sports fan, following both the Patriots and Bruins. But his greatest joy was following the many sporting events of his grandsons, even traveling along with his wife to various tournaments up state New York and Canada.

He enjoyed working around his home and loved to dance following the "Jack D' Johns" a local band, to which he and his wife danced the night way!

In his later years, he and his longtime companion Dolores Audlee enjoyed traveling, having been to Alaska along with many other locations.

George will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, enjoyed by his many friends and family, and a smile that made everyone around him smile as well.

He is survived by his loving daughter Terri (Smith) Savage and her husband Malcolm, (who was Georges second son), of Hanson and his grandsons, Michael Savage and his wife Tia and great grandson Tanner all of Sutton, NH, and Christopher Savage and his longtime partner Erin McCue of Portland, Maine. In addition to his family he also survived by his longtime companion Dolores Audlee of Stoughton as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Lawrence "Larry" Smith and his twelve siblings.

Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, October 8 from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street, (Rte. 58 @ the Rotary) Whitman and his funeral service on Thursday October 9 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel.
