George Adlow Traugh left this world peacefully, at home with loved ones on Sunday, December 8, 2024 from complications of cancer. He was 85.
George was born to Anna Ellen (Zieser) and Jesse Grant Traugh, the next-to-last of five boys - Bob, Richard, Jesse, Jr., and Denny- and grew up in Berwick, Pa. He joined the U.S. Air Force after High School and served his country for three years with honor in Europe and elsewhere.
Back home, after a stint at the Wise potato chip factory and hoping for broader horizons, George took a job at the celebrated Buck Hill Falls Inn, where he worked from 1961 to 1975. A quick learner with a ready smile and willing attitude, George was a jack of all trades, rising to become the manager of the Inn's Print Shop.
From Buck Hill he moved to Theo B. Price Lumber yard in Mountainhome, where he worked from 1975 until 2018. Dispensing hardware, lumber and paint along with wry good humor, George became a fixture of the community. A dedicated Scout Master, it was George's great pride to have mentored nine scouts on their journey to Eagle Scout. In 1995, along the Susquehanna River, he met the love of his life, Ray Wolf. Wolfy and George soon committed their lives to each other in the presence of dozens of friends, and were married on Christmas Day 2015.
George was a lifelong adventurer and outdoorsman- canoeing the Everglades and some of the most perilous rivers of the world, making friends of strangers on the Appalachian Trail, and fishing for and finally catching "the big one" on the Susquehanna at the beloved camp he shared with Ray, among countless other exploits. He was a lover of fine art, deeply knowledgeable about Native American life and culture, coins, and Boy Scout memorabilia, and a lively storyteller.
A celebration of George's well-lived life will be held at Bolock Funeral Home in Paradise Valley on Saturday, December 14, 2024 starting at 10:00A.M. with a service at 12 noon, to be followed by a gathering of friends at Barrett Paradise Friendly Library.
In lieu of flowers, donations in George's memory may be made to the Library, 6500 Route 191, Cresco, Pa 18326 www.barrettlibrary.org.
