George H. Troxell III passed away on August 8, 2025, at the age of 79, with his beloved wife, Patricia, at his bedside after a brief illness. A former president of the Academy of New Orleans Trial Lawyers, George lived a life rich in intellect, adventure, and quiet defiance of convention.
In the late 1980s, he hired Patricia Sheran as his secretary and office manager. Quickly realizing she was indispensable, George married her to ensure she remained on the "payroll" for life. In 1990, the two opened a law practice on Upper Canal Street in a historic home George personally restored with Patricia. For decades, they worked side by side, taking pride in giving a voice to those in need of a steadfast advocate.
Outside the office, George and Patricia shared countless days sailing, fishing, and camping along the Gulf Coast. From an early age, George had been an avid reader and accomplished writer, eventually becoming fluent in four foreign languages. He delighted in reading great works in their original tongues, refusing to settle for translations when he could experience an author's words directly. After retiring, he and Patricia traveled extensively-especially to Europe and Patricia's native Honduras-allowing George to keep his language skills sharp and his appreciation for other cultures deep.
Those who knew him best would tell you that George was as kind as he was opinionated, always ready with advice and steadfast in his refusal to follow passing trends. His independence of thought was matched only by his curiosity, his sharp wit, and his appetite for knowledge, for the perfect meal, and for the richness of life itself.
Born April 30, 1946, in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, to George H. Troxell Jr. and Nancy Armitage Troxell, George moved with his family to New Orleans in 1956. He graduated from Martin Behrman High School, attended Loyola University, and earned his law degree from Tulane Law School in 1972. His love of learning took him even further-across the Atlantic to Stockholm University, where he pursued advanced legal studies taught entirely in Swedish.
George is predeceased by his son, George Henry Troxell IV, and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Patricia of New Orleans; his brothers, Jeffrey Troxell, MD, of New London, NH, and Todd Troxell, MD, of Salt Lake City, UT; their families; and many nieces and nephews who will carry forward his example of living life fully, on one's own terms.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor George's generous spirit with a donation to a worthy cause that benefits those less fortunate.
