On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife Cynthia, George Walter Wanberg, 80, of Tavares, FL, entered into the eternal presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born on October 23, 1944, in New Rochelle, NY, George was the son of Ernest and Leona (Walter) Wanberg. After graduating high school, he attended Kemper Military School from 1963 to 1965 before joining the United States Marine Corps. George proudly served his country during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968, including through the Tet Offensive. Upon returning home, he earned his degree from the University of Denver and went on to build a successful 35-year career in medical sales, also working in real estate.
To know George was to know what mattered most to him: serving Jesus, supporting the Marine Corps and fellow veterans, and being a devoted husband to Cynthia. A committed follower of Christ since the age of 51, George passionately led many to salvation. He often said the most important thing a Christian could do was to be in the Word every day.
George's devotion to veterans was unwavering. He actively participated in numerous organizations, including the
Disabled American Veterans; American Legion Post 35, Mount Dora; AMVETS Post 2006, Leesburg; Vietnam Veterans of America, The Villages; and the Chapel of the Four Chaplains. He was inducted into the Florida Veterans Hall of Fame in Tallahassee. George also served as Past Commandant of the Marine Corps League, Detachment 1240, Leesburg; Chaplain of the Marine Corps League, State of Florida; and Past Administrator of Cornerstone Hospice's Veteran Salute Program.
A faithful member of The Cross Church in Mount Dora, George and Cynthia proudly founded the church's Veterans of the Cross(VOTC) Ministry in 2017-a ministry created by veterans, for veterans.
George was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Karen Kling and LeeAnn Milo. Left to cherish his memory are his adoring wife of 37 years, Cynthia Brewer Wanberg; his son Erik Andreas Wanberg, daughter-in-law Lindsay, and grandson Kole of Auburn, ME; his father- and mother-in-law, Edward and Connie Brewer of Oxford, FL; his sister-in-law Carol Brewer Coslett, affectionately known to George as "Keeksie," of Wilkes-Barre, PA; and nieces Chelsey Coslett-Traver (husband Matt) of Forty Fort, PA, and Catherine Coslett of Portland, ME.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 8, at 11 a.m. at The Cross Church, 4425 County Road 19A, Mount Dora, FL 32757. Attendees are encouraged to show their American spirit by wearing red, white, and blue.
George was deeply loved by many who cherished his big smile, hearty laugh, sparkling eyes, and genuine warmth. His presence and contributions will be sorely missed. His family has no doubt that upon arriving in heaven, George heard the words every Christian longs to hear:
"Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master." -Matthew 25:21
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in George's honor to Veterans of the Cross (VOTC) or to Villagers for Veterans' New Beginnings for Women Veterans Endowment, supporting Ashley's House in Eustis, FL.
