He grew up on the farm and attended country school in Beaver and Grand Junction. He graduated from Ogden High School with the class of 1953. Following high school, Gerald honorably served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1953 to 1961.
On October 4, 1953, Gerald was united in marriage to Janice Hillman at the Grand Junction Methodist Church. The couple resided in Boone before making their home in Ogden. He also worked part time for several years at Claussen’s Texaco in Ogden. He became the Ogden Telephone Company manager in 1967, and continued as manager until his retirement in 1999.
