Deacon Gerald R. Defayette, 84, long-time resident of West Chazy, and more recently of Victory Place in Plattsburgh, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, at CVPH Medical Center, with his loving family by his side.
He was born on April 6, 1941, in Plattsburgh, one of two cherished sons of the late Abbie (Corron) and Victor Defayette and was raised in West Chazy, a community that helped shape the faith, kindness, and strong values he carried throughout his life.
Gerald graduated from Beekmantown Central School and continued his spiritual journey at Graymoor, where he became a Friar. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Frances, whom he later married. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, devotion, and family. Gerald continued his calling at Wadhams Hall, where he was ordained as a deacon, dedicating his life to serving others and strengthening his community through ministry and compassion.
Alongside his religious vocation, Gerald worked faithfully at Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories until his retirement in 1994. He was known for his strong work ethic, humility, and the genuine care he showed to everyone he met.
Deacon Gerald was a pillar of his parish community at St. Joseph's, where he served faithfully for many years. His presence brought comfort, guidance, and encouragement to countless individuals and families. His deep faith was evident not only in his ministry but also in the way he lived each day, with patience, generosity, and quiet strength.
In the last two years of his life, Gerald resided at Victory Place in Plattsburgh, where he formed meaningful friendships that he treasured deeply. He shared many joyful moments filled with heartfelt conversations, lively games of Uno and other pastimes, and Saturday mornings made special by shared laughter and delicious blueberry pancakes.
Gerald found his greatest happiness in spending time with his beloved family. He loved family game nights, tending to his garden, dining at favorite local restaurants, and reminiscing about the many experiences and memories that shaped his life. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose love and guidance will remain a lasting gift to those who knew him.
He is survived by his loving children, Kathy (Glenn) Rudolph, David Defayette, Michael (Crystal) Defayette, and Jeffery Defayette, as well as several grandchildren whom he adored with all his heart.
In addition to his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances, who passed away on June 17, 2022; his child, Anndrew Defayette; his brother, Lyman; and sister-in-law, Mary.
