Gerald "Jerry" Hull Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home on Jul. 8, 2025.
Gerald "Jerry" L. Hull, 79, of Quincy, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

Jerry was born October 31, 1945, in Quincy, IL to Virgil and Dorothy (Frohn) Hull. He was married to Mary E. Baker on June 21, 1970, in Ursa, IL. She preceded him in death on November 16, 2019.

A proud graduate of Unity High School, class of 1963, Jerry answered the call of duty and served in the United States Army, fighting in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967. After returning home, Jerry found his calling in agriculture, working alongside his father on their family farm, raising pigs and cattle and cultivating corn, soybeans, and wheat. He also managed his own farm in Honey Creek Township, where he continued to grow crops with the same passion and dedication. In 1993, Jerry and Mary relocated to Quincy, where they indulged their green thumbs with a large garden, growing an array of produce and continuing their tradition of canning their harvest.

Jerry's life was characterized by his many interests and talents. He was a dedicated custodian at First Christian Church and Faith Assembly of God; a role he fulfilled with the same care and attention he gave to his crops. A member of Ursa Christian Church, Jerry's faith was an integral part of his life. His love for dancing brought him to the Eagles Club and the Elks Club, where he was known for his lively twist and warm smile. Traveling with Mary to destinations like Mt. Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and Colorado added chapters of adventure to their love story.

Known for his handy nature, Jerry could often be found tinkering on cars, fixing various items, and even constructing a 3-car garage with his own hands. Jerry's affinity for ice cream was legendary; he was a familiar face at church ice cream socials and, in his later years, became a bingo master, delighting in winning tokens that would buy him his favorite treat.

Above all, Jerry's greatest joy was his family. He was a constant presence in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his face lighting up with pride and happiness at every opportunity to be with them. His legacy is carried on by his children, Benjamin L. Hull of Quincy and Hannah M. Hull (John Plisevich) of St. Louis, MO; his grandchildren, Alexis (Haistings) Haughey (Justin) and Zachary Haistings; and his great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Brody Haughey. He also leaves behind his sisters, Becky Bradbury (Earl) and Dixie Croxton (Ron), and his brothers, Gary Dean Hull and Larry Hull.

Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, his parents, Virgil and Dorothy Hull, and his sister-in-law, Sonja Hull.

Friends and Family are invited to Jerry's Life Celebration at a visitation that will be Wednesday, July 9, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy, IL. A Funeral Ceremony will be at 10:00 am Thursday, July 10, 2025, at O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy. Pastor Bill Mitchell will officiate. Burial will follow at New Providence Cemetery in Ursa, IL with full military honors given by the United States Army Funeral Honors Detail and the American Legion of Mendon.
