He was a lifelong Christian who found great joy and purpose in his spiritual journey and community.
After graduating from North Scott High School in Eldridge, Iowa, Gerry went on to earn a degree in Religion from the University of Iowa. His passion for learning continued as he pursued additional graduate work in accounting and management, culminating in obtaining his CPA Certificate. On April 27, 1968, he married the love of his life, Marilu, and together they built a family that included two sons, Matt and Dan, as well as their beloved grandchildren, Daxton, Maeva, Aubrey, and Delia. Gerry also cherished the bond he shared with his two sisters, who were an integral part of his life.
Gerry's professional journey was as varied as it was impactful. He spent two years in social work, specializing in family and marital counseling, before transitioning to a role as a business manager at the Riverview Release Center in Newton. In 1984, he moved to North Liberty, where he served as a business manager and personnel officer at the Iowa Classification Center in Coralville. Demonstrating an entrepreneurial spirit, Gerry later purchased a CPA firm, which evolved into the successful Kuhl, Phillis, and Jans.
His work extended well beyond his professional endeavors. Gerry was an enthusiastic tropical fish hobbyist and served as the treasurer for the International Guppy Association and the American Livebearer Association. His commitment to his faith was evident in his involvement with Christ the King Lutheran Church, where he was received into membership on June 21, 2011. There, he contributed to the audit committee, worship committee, and evangelism committee. Additionally, Gerry played a significant role in the Southeast Iowa Synod, serving on the audit and mission committees and assisting in the formation of what is now known as Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Gerry's dedication to his community was unwavering. He served as a council member and mayor pro tempore of North Liberty, roles in which he found great fulfillment. His service extended to the board of Horizons, where he made lasting contributions to the well-being of others.
On Sunday, July 20th Gerry passed away in North Liberty, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family. His legacy is one of unwavering faith, steadfast love, and community service. In death Gerry joins his beloved wife, Marilu.
