Gerald Omer Matthewson, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on September 11, 2024, in Columbia, Tennessee. Born on January 7, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Gerald was the cherished son of the late John and Delphia Matthewson.
Gerald is survived by his loving children, Trena Fair (Rick) of Tennessee, Gerald Matthewson Jr. (Nancy) of Texas, and John Matthewson of Indiana. He was a devoted father and a doting grandfather to his grandchildren: Jimmy Fair (Jessica), Jennifer Olson (mother of Ellie Fair), Shawn (Kelli) Fair, Benjamin (Karen) Matthewson, Nathan (Emily) Fair, Alicia Fair, Drew Matthewson, and Hayden Matthewson. legacy extends to his great-grandchildren: Ellie Fair, Natalee Roman, Emersyn Pence, Gatlin Fair, Riley Fair, Aiden Fair, Peyton Fair, Grayson Howell, Remington Howell, and Luca Matthewson; and also survived by his cousin who was practically his sister: Shirley Matthewson Spaulding.
Known for his unwavering passion for John Wayne movies, old western films, and Elvis, Gerald also had a fondness for his white Cadillac. His professional life included work as a construction worker and running a towing business in Indianapolis until his retirement. He was an honorary citizen of Boys’ Town in Indianapolis, where he volunteered regularly and made a significant impact on the community.
Gerald’s grandchildren fondly recall the joyful moments they spent with him, particularly the thrilling roller coaster rides they shared at amusement parks during their childhood. His energetic presence and exuberant spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of life service for Gerald will be held on September 27, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Connection Church in Columbia, Tennessee. A private burial will take place in Indiana.
The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice and Life CareCenter of Columbia for the compassion and care of Mr. Gerald.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the John Wayne Cancer Foundation in his honor. Gerald’s memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
