Obituary of Gerald Alan Rand Hemphill
Gerald Jerry Alan Rand Hemphill, age 78 of Painesville Township, passed away on August 24, 2022 at
Seidman Cancer Center, University Hospitals, Cleveland, after two weeks of fighting hard to stay with his
family. He was born on February 3, 1944, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Charles and Ann (nee: Rand)
Hemphill. Jerry was an electronic technician at Lincoln Electric, where he had been employed for 38
years before retiring in 2002.
Jerry could fix anything and could make or build anything: furniture, clocks, stained and beveled glass,
any home or garden renovation. He always provided for his family, including the first VCR in the
neighborhood, a pinball machine, one of the first PC s, etc. He was a great partner in all projects with
his wife and sons: car repair, gardening, woodworking, cooking. He always had a joke at the ready and
helped fill our frequent family dinners with joy and laughter. Even though he lost his father on
Christmas Eve at the age of 8, he made Christmas traditions a priority for the rest of his life.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Carol (nee: Thompson), sons, Jeff (Amy) and Brian, grandchildren Kara and
Eric, and brother Doug (Gail), along with nieces, a nephew, grand-nieces and -nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 2, 2022 from 5-7 PM at Johnson Funeral Home, 368
Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio 44077. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 3,
2022 at 1:00 PM at St. James Episcopal Church, 131 N. State Street, Painesville, Ohio.
