Gerald "Bud" Skaggs, 73, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2025 at his home in Saybrook.
He was born on March 9, 1952. An Ashtabula resident his whole life, he was the son of Roy Nelson and Nola (Clark) Skaggs.
Bud attended Ashtabula High School and afterwards, made the selfless decision to honorably serve our country in the United States Army from 1970 to 1974. During his military service, he worked in utilities, construction, and water purification; skills he would continue to use long after his time in uniform. He was awarded two certificates of achievement in construction while in the service as well as a Bronze Star before being honorably discharged. After his service, Bud went on to work for Ohio American Water Company and later for the City of Painesville, continuing his dedication to essential infrastructure and public service. He also spent several years working for Coca-Cola in Geneva.
He truly enjoyed and thrived at his many hands-on talents, even building his own home to enjoy with his family over the years. He was also a drummer for the Cimarron Band and had a longtime interest in vintage cars and trucks, owning a few over the years. Above all, Bud was a family man. He put a lot of time and care into his home and into the people he loved, and it showed in everything he did. Bud always enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and shared a close bond with his nieces and nephews. He loved hanging out at his nephew Jamie's garage, better known as 84 Tavern, with those dearest to him.
Bud is survived by his loving wife, Donna (Caudill) Skaggs, whom he married September 5, 1992; children, Brandy Horne and Chad Horne; three grandchildren, Valerie (Joey Wattunen) McKissick, Taylor (Michael Hudson) Horne, and Sadie (Anthony Shields) Horne; three sisters, Martha (Jim) Ryan, Judy Green, and Sandy Newsome; one brother, Gary (Brenda) Skaggs; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Avery and Winston Hudson, who were the children of Taylor and Michael; his sisters, Linda Hamilton, Aloma Tackett, Sharon Skaggs, and Diane Green; brothers, Larry Skaggs, Carlos Skaggs, and Leon Skaggs; and his parents.
