He was born February 24, 1935, in Auglaize County, to Dewey and Marie (Shaw) Spencer who preceded him in death. On December 15, 1956, he married Clarabell (Evans) Spencer who preceded him in death on February 27, 2024.
Surviving are their children: twin daughters, Dianna Spencer of Lima and Deanna (Curt) Gingrich of Powell, OH and son, Donavan Spencer of Lima; five grandchildren-Anthony Spencer, Hannah Spencer, Jayarden Spencer, Jonathan Gingrich and Emily (Trevor) Lampton. A sister-in-law, Sue Spencer survives in Waynesfield.
Gerald was preceded in death by a son, Anthony "Tony" Spencer, and two brothers and sister-in-law, Donald (Mary Ann) Spencer and Marvin Spencer.
He was a 1953 graduate of Waynesfield-Goshen High School. He retired as a heating and air conditioning technician from John P. Timmerman, Co., and Hughes Plumbing and Heating. Gerald was a member of Lima Community Church where he was an usher, board member, money counter and head of the Caravan program. He started driving a tractor on Dewey's farm when he was five years old and never lost his love for the farm. He was an aficionado of historic farm equipment and especially knew all the old John Deeres. As a grandfather, he found great joy in teaching his grandchildren how to fish.
Joint services for Gerald and Clarabell will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the Shawnee Chapel of Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services with Pastor Brad Taylor officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until the service begins.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lima Community Church.
