Gerald Sulek June 27, 1943 – January 5, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gerald "Jerry" Sulek, who left us on January 5, 2025, at the age of 81. Jerry was a beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather, cousin, and cherished friend.
Jerry was born on June 27, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, to John and Violet (Raickovich) Sulek. He was raised alongside his five siblings and spent much of his adult life racing AMA flat track under the number #4x. When he wasn't on his motorcycle, Jerry could often be found clogging with friends.
He greatly valued time with his family, whether it was hunting, camping, or simply spending time together. Jerry was always the first to arrive and the last to leave any gathering. As a grandfather, he thrived, playing an active role in Madison and Kylie's childhoods by shuttling them to dance lessons and soccer games. He rarely missed soccer matches, even when they took place in Youngstown, Ohio. Jerry also cherished his time with his nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, always ready to share love and laughter.
Jerry is survived by his daughters, Jackie Sulek and Julie (Joseph) Hughes; his siblings, John David "Dave" (Mary Ann) Sulek, Joseph (Beverly) Sulek, and Patricia "Patty" Sulek Holstein (the late Charles Holstein); his granddaughters, Madison and Kylie Hughes; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John; his mother, Violet; his brother, Michael; his sister, Mary Joan "Butchie" (the late Paul Sturr Sr.); and many close friends.
Visitation will be held on January 9th from 2-8 pm at Charles Step Funeral Home (
Redford, MI), where family and friends are invited to celebrate his life. Additional visitation will take place on Friday, January 10th, from 11 am to 12 pm, with a service immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Brady Effect in honor of Jerry's memory. If you wish to send flowers, please arrange for them to be delivered directly to the funeral home.
The Brady Effect was founded after the Hughes/Sulek and Donnelly families tragically lost Brady Donnelly in September 2024. Their mission is to empower children on the autism spectrum through accessible and inclusive swim education. Envelopes for cash or check donations (checks payable to The Brady Effect) will be available during visitation hours. To inquire about electronic donations please contact

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered support, love, and compassion during this time.
Rest in peace, Jerry. You will forever remain in our hearts.
