Geraldine Covington

Geraldine Covington was born January 14, 1955, in New Haven, CT, to the late Bishop Jeremiah Covington and Alberta Elizabeth Parks Covington. She passed away peacefully on September 27, 2023. Geraldine was lovingly referred to as "Deanie" by friends and family.
Geraldine attended New Haven public schools and graduated from James Hillhouse High School in 1973. She was highly involved in her school and community and fully used all her talents. She demonstrated her athleticism as captain of the majorettes, a member of the track team, and a cheerleading squad member. In addition, she played the French horn in the marching band and participated in the school newspaper.
As a bishop's daughter, Geraldine always prioritized God and serving. She was a devoted and lifelong member of Mount Hope Temple Church, where she actively served in various capacities, including pianist for the Sunshine Band, director of the drama ministry, president and director of the youth choir, vice president of the Missionary Department, member of the adult choir, member of the Bishop Jeremiah Covington Scholarship Committee, and the Pastoral Search Committee. She also served in the New England District Choir.
Geraldine was passionate about her education and connecting with people. She received a full scholarship to attend Harvard University in her first year of college. Ultimately, she furthered her education at Emerson College in Boston, MA where she was actively engaged in many ways, graduating in 1977 with her Bachelor's in Speech & Communications.
After college, Geraldine worked at John Hancock Insurance Company in Boston, MA. She also worked at two non-profits before beginning her career in social services for the State of Connecticut. She retired from the State Department of Social Services after 30 years of dedicated service. Geraldine made her voice heard throughout her community, civically and politically. She was an active member of the Democratic Ward Committee in Newhallville and was active in politics around the city.
Geraldine was a true diva at heart. Even when her health declined, she always had her nails done, her hair done, the best wardrobe, and pristine decor. She enjoyed Harry Potter movies and was a big fan of Earth, Wind and Fire. She also enjoyed traveling to Haiti, Bermuda, and Jamaica.
Geraldine leaves to cherish her memory, son, Aaron (Sarah) Annis; grandson, Aiden Annis; sister, Virginia (Bishop John C.) Wright; brother, Jerry (Barbara) Covington; sister, Janice Caldwell; brother-in-law, William Tripp; aunt, Edna Broadhurst; goddaughters, Mariah Watson and Jazmine McAllister; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends. Geraldine was predeceased by her son, Aric Annis; and sisters, Miriam Cooper, Vivian Covington, and Linda Tripp.
