Of Indian Land, SC
Mr. Green, 92, passed away on November 12, 2025.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 19 from 5-7pm at Heritage Funeral Home, Ballantyne Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 20 at 11am at St. Matthew Catholic Church (Chapel) with Fr Nicholas Kramer, Celebrant. He will then be laid to rest in the church columbarium.
Gerard was born on June 4, 1933, in Manhattan, NY, the only child of Patrick and Mary (Connors) Green.
Mr. Green was proud to grow up on Taylor Avenue in the Bronx (or as he said the Bronx). He graduated from Power Memorial High School and began working at Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States in 1951. After getting drafted in 1954 he served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan as a teletype operator. During his service, Gerard earned a National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
After leaving the Army in 1956, he entered Fordham University, studying at night to earn a bachelor's degree in business. At the time, he also returned to Equitable where he would work for 34 years, retiring as a manager. At Equitable, he was recognized for his contributions winning several company awards. However, the most valuable prize he won was his future wife, Ellen.
Ellen and Gerard worked in the same department at Equitable early in their careers, but there was no romance at first. They would see each other prior to work, at morning mass and Schrafft's restaurant, but were nodding acquaintances. Eventually, Gerard, secretly admiring Ellen, mustered the courage to ask her for a date. They eventually dated seriously and married in June of 1963. They moved to Queens, NY and lived mostly there before moving to Fort Mill, SC in 2012. Gerard and Ellen would have two children, Michael and Gerard.
Gerard was a devoted family man, steady and soft-spoken, with a kindness that came through in everything he did. He had simple tastes and found happiness in the rhythms of home. Though reserved by nature, he had a wonderfully dry sense of humor, and when something truly amused him - especially his own "Dad jokes" - he laughed with joy. Whenever he walked into a crowded room, he would, without fail, wryly observe "Everywhere I go, I attract a crowd."
He was committed to his church parish, St. Mel's in Flushing, volunteering for organizations including the Home School Association and Holy Name Society. Whether helping to run New Year's Eve and St. Patrick's Day dances or pitching in wherever needed, he approached service the same way he approached life, with reliability and humility.
Most of all, Gerard was unwavering in his love for family. He adored Ellen and cherished their 62 years together. He was endlessly proud of his sons, Michael and Gerard, their spouses Jessica and Susan, and delighted in watching his grandchildren grow. His calm presence, quiet strength, and gentle good humor will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Left behind to cherish his memories are his beloved wife, Ellen (O'Mara) Green; children, Michael Green (Jessica) and Gerard Green (Susan); grandchildren Marybeth, Catherine, Laura, Ronan and Dashiell.
