Gerda E. Nichols, fondly known as Geri, graced the world with her vibrant spirit and unwavering passion from November 18, 1923, until her peaceful departure on October 4, 2025, in Troy, Ohio. Born in Dayton, Ohio, she radiated energy and a vivaciousness that left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
Geri's life was underpinned by a deep commitment to education, as she devoted several years to teaching art at Van Cleve Junior High School in Troy and both Math and Art at Miami East High School in Casstown. Her enthusiasm for fostering young minds was rivaled only by her remarkable creativity, which expressed itself through her exceptional talents in sewing and costume design. Known for her splendid creations, Geri worked with numerous theatre groups, enchanting audiences and garnering accolades for her costumes that breathed life into their narratives. Additionally, she possessed a deft hand for crafting unique jewelry and indulged in the game of bridge, savoring the camaraderie it brought.
Her love for arts and community extended beyond her personal pursuits, as she was an engaged member of the Troy Hayner Cultural Center, volunteering substantial time and energy to enrich the cultural fabric of her beloved Troy. A founding member of both the Troy Civic Theatre and the Country Workshop, Geri played an instrumental role in nurturing the arts within her community, ensuring that the gifts of creativity and expression flourished for generations to come.
Geri's vibrant essence was celebrated widely; her 100th birthday was marked with great honor when the mayor of Troy proclaimed that day as Geri Nichols' Day. To commemorate this remarkable milestone, a tree was planted at the senior center, symbolizing the legacy of her generosity, spirit, and contributions.
She shared her life with a loving family, including her cherished daughters, Debra Staudt (Jack) and Melissa Nichols Purcell (Dennis); grandson, Nick Staudt (Elena), and great-grandchildren, Xavier, Lola, and Dominic Staudt, all who brought her immense pride and delight. She also leaves behind a dear family friend, Mitzi Bartee, who stood by her side, sharing in many of the sweet moments of life.
Geri is now reunited with her beloved parents, Gaylord and Margaret Lutz, and her devoted husband, William Nichols, whose memories will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
Her legacy is illuminated not only through the numerous artistic endeavors she championed but also through the love and connections she fostered throughout her lifetime. Geri will be remembered as a true force of nature, whose kindness and vibrancy enriched the lives of others and whose spirit will undoubtedly continue to inspire those who carry her memory forward.
A celebration of Geri's life will be held at a later date and will be announced as soon as the information is available.
