Gertraude Arndt Obituary
Gertraude (Trudy) Bsumek Arndt
1937 - 2025
South Jordan, UT - Gertraude (Trudy) Bsumek Arndt, a beloved wife, daughter, mother, grandmother (Omi), great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully 22 August 2025 in Millcreek, Utah. In her final hours, she was surrounded by many who loved her. Trudy "Omi", as she was known to her family, was steadfast in her faith, devoted as a wife and mother, and was described as a sweet lady by many.
Trudy was born 30 October 1937 in Göttingen, Germany to Edwin Franz Bsumek and Ella Bierwald. She was the oldest of four children. Her dad was so excited to have a baby that he trimmed the basket she was going to go home in with flowers. Due to World War II, Trudy's family had to move several times. Her dad was in the German Army between 1939-1945. After her father returned from being a prisoner of war, Trudy's family crossed into western Germany where they stayed at a refugee camp for a few months. Eventually they were assigned housing in one room of a forest ranger's office building in Nürtingen, where her family lived for more than five years. They immigrated to the United States, arriving in January 1952. They settled in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Following her graduation from West High School in 1955 she attended Stevens Henager Business College. She worked at Western Steel, and then after her children were all in school, she worked part-time in the Granite School District as a secretary at Plymouth Elementary and later worked full-time as the financial secretary at Taylorsville High School for 19 years.
Trudy met the man who would become her eternal sweetheart, Hans Joachim Alfred Arndt, through the German Organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on 1 February 1957. They continued their loving courtship in this life for 57 years prior to his passing on 11 February 2014 and Trudy eagerly anticipated resuming that joyful relationship with Hans.
They were blessed with three children: Gary (Jennifer) Arndt, Riverton, Utah; Cindy (Daniel) Dunnigan, Riverton, Utah; and Ronney (Martha) Arndt, Salt Lake City, Utah. They have also been blessed with 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Trudy treasured time with her family most of all. She also enjoyed time with friends, reading, knitting, traveling, attending live musical programs and taking long drives in the mountains.
Trudy was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all her life, serving faithfully in the Primary, Young Women and Relief Society organizations. From November 2002 to May 2004, she and Hans served a full-time mission for the Church at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City where they prepared thousands of names to receive temple ordinances. Her final words of counsel to her posterity were, "Stay close to the Lord."
Trudy is survived by all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a brother and sister-in-law (Peter and Maria Bsumek), a sister (Eva Woodruff), a brother-in-law and sister-in-law (Dieter and Waltraud Arndt) and a sister-in-law (Karen Bsumek). She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one brother (Reinhardt Bsumek).
A viewing will be held Saturday, 30 August 2025 from 10:00 AM -11:00 AM at Cannon Mortuary, 2460 East Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. The funeral will follow immediately after at the same location.
Following the funeral service, the interment will take place at the Mountain View Memorial Cemetery, Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
