Gilbert P. Montaño, age 86, peacefully passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025, in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Born on November 18, 1938, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he was the cherished son of Vicente and Annie Montaño. A proud graduate of Valley High School, Class of 1958, Gilbert embarked on a fulfilling career as a steam plant boiler operator at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he dedicated many years before retiring in 2004.
On September 24, 1960, Gilbert married Ruby Margaret Lucero, his beloved partner of 64 years. Together, they created a warm and loving family environment. Gilbert had a passion for NFL football and UNM Lobo sports, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family. A man who loved to dance, he found happiness in every moment shared with his loved ones.
A devout member of San Ysidro Catholic Church in Corrales, NM, Gilbert served as a church usher, contributing to his community with grace and humility.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Vicente and Annie Montaño.
Gilbert is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Ruby Montaño of Corrales, NM; his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Michael Rael of Corrales, NM; his son, Phillip Montaño of Corrales, NM; his son and daughter-in-law, Leo Montaño and Denisse Mendez of Corrales, NM; his daughter and son-in-law, April and Mark Hellmann of Corrales, NM; as well as his treasured grandchildren, Kristopher Montaño, Nathan and Ashley Velasquez, Amanda Montaño, Chelsea Montaño, Brianna and Stefan Richter, Ian Mendez, and Liam Montaño.
Viewing and visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Daniels Family Funeral Services – Sara Chapel, located at 4310 Sara Rd. SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124. Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at San Ysidro Catholic Church, followed by a Celebration of Mass at 10:30 AM and interment at San Ysidro Catholic Cemetery. A reception will begin at 12:30 PM in the Ventana Ranch Community Center, 10001 Rainbow Blvd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87114.
Gilbert's presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
