Gilberto Correa, of Kingwood, Texas passed away on August 3, 2024, surrounded by family at age 91. He was born in Facatativa, a small country town on the outskirts of Bogota, Colombia, S.A. on April 9, 1933, to parents Silvestre and Georgina Correa.
Gilberto's wife, Clara Alicia Carvajal Correa, passed away on June 13, 2009. He is survived by his children and grandchildren: Daughter, Clara Georgina Correa-Gibson; Son, Nelson Ricardo Correa; Daughter, Martha Teresa Correa-Apodaca; Son, Jose Gilberto Correa; Daughter, Victoria Amparo Correa-Camargo; and eight grandchildren: Nicholas Gibson, Ashley Pieper, Cali Apodaca, Daniel Apodaca, Kristen Correa, Kayla Correa and Aaron Correa. Six great grandchildren: Aiden, Emma, Sophia and Caleb Gibson; Saige Apodaca and Lucia Watson-Apodaca. As well as brothers: Silvestre Correa and Guillermo Correa, and various cousins and relatives.
Early on Gilberto started his career as a DJ for a classical music radio station in Bogota. He had a great passion for music and loved playing the accordion. He developed a love for electronics and later became a TV/Radio repair man. He met his wife, Clara, in Bogota, Colombia where they married on July 18, 1959.
In 1968, he traveled to New York City. Guided by our Lord, he sat next to a priest on the airplane who helped him settle into a new country. He worked hard, saved and brought his wife and children over to live in Bristol, Connecticut. As his family grew, so did his career. He eventually moved his family to Houston, Texas. His strong work ethic and determination opened many doors, and he was able to receive a license in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Reed Tool/Baker Hughes for many years and eventually retired.
Gilberto and his wife dedicated their lives to their five children. They taught them that with the Lord's guidance, hard work and determination, they could accomplish anything. They valued faith, discipline and a strong work ethic and instilled these values through example and deed.
Gilberto had a passion for cars. He loved working on them and could practically repair anything. He was always willing and excited to help with any repairs and loved passing on that knowledge to his children and grandchildren.
After retirement, Gilberto and his wife, dedicated their time to volunteering at Humble Area Assistance Ministry (H.A.A.M) and St. Martha's Kitchen. They helped to organize, clean and repair small appliances as well as served meals at St. Martha's Kitchen. They were both firm believers that we must give back and help others. When he saw someone in need, he would not hesitate to lend a hand. He believed that we must show thanks to the Lord God for his blessings, by helping others in his name. He was blessed to be loved by his children who cared for and helped him in the later years of his life. He became a beloved resident at Arbor Terrace and Rosemont Assisted Facility, where the staff always commented on what a great and gentle man he was.
To our Pappi, thank you for all that you gave us, we love you. May you rest in peace and in the glory of Almighty God, the Father, His Son, our Lord Christ Jesus, and in the unity of The Holy Spirit. We will miss your beautiful blue eyes, your fearless spirit and the courage that brought us all here to this country to give us a better future!
