Girard V. "Sam" Smith, 85, of Latrobe, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Ligonier Gardens.
Born January 29, 1940, in Latrobe, he was the son of the late Gerald and Alice (Fisher) Smith.
Sam was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Bradenville. Prior to his retirement, he worked in the Pennsylvania Unemployment Office. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served two years in Japan. He was a member of AARP AND P.A.R.S.E. Sam enjoyed playing horseshoes, traveling, especially on cruises, and bus trips.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor A. (Lazur) Smith; a son, Kevin M. Smith; and two sisters, Geraldine Miller and Janet Davis.
Sam is survived by two sons, David P. Smith, and his wife, Melissa, of Latrobe and Todd V. Smith, and his wife, Jackie, of Georgia; five grandchildren, Nick Smith (Crystal), Michaela McKendrick (Dylan), Samantha Smith, Alexis Nasser (Josh), and Nathan Smith; eight great-grandchildren, Lucas, McKinley, Delilah, Phoenix, Dylan Jr., Chelsie, Travis, and Brooks; and he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received from 9 to 11 am Friday at the Lopatich-Brinker Funeral Home, LLC, 601 Weldon Street, Latrobe. Military services will be conducted at 10:45 am Friday in the funeral home by the Latrobe-Derry Veterans Honor Guard. A funeral service will be held at 11 am Friday in the funeral home. Private interment will be at St. Mary's Byzantine Cemetery, Bradenville.
