It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Giuse Vu
Ng c Thanh, lovingly known as Thanh, Rùa, or Chase, on June 6, 2025,
at the age of 46. He left this world as a hero, giving the gift of life to
others.
Due to a clerical error, Thanh celebrated his birthday on July 27, 1978, though his true birthdate
was September 27, 1978. In his typical way, he never dwelled on it, choosing instead to focus on
loving others and living with purpose.
Thanh arrived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from Vietnam in late 1992 or early 1993 with his
parents and siblings. He attended Pulaski High School beginning in 1993 and later studied at the
University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
A man of deep faith and compassion, Thanh joined and devoted most of his time to oàn TNTT
ng Hành, the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement chapter in Milwaukee, WI, in 1997.
He was one of the pioneering young members to join the Youth Leader Training Program when
the ng Hành chapter was first established at St. Anthony Catholic Parish, before it later moved
to St. Martin of Tours Parish. He served as a youth leader ever since.
Thanh continually sought personal growth by actively attending various training camps and
fulfilling all requirements to become a Level 1 Youth Leader Trainer in the Eucharistic Youth
Movement. He helped organize and lead countless training camps, both locally and across the
United States.
Thanh played a major role in the thriving of the ng Hành chapter. His support and dedication
were truly inspiring. Whether it was staying late to clean up, waking up early to cook for the
kids, helping with fundraisers, singing in the choir, or driving thousands of miles for camp —
whatever it was, he was always there, always showing up with a bright smile and a joke. Thanh
was dependable, funny, and carried a down-to-earth energy that was contagious to everyone
around him. He was a guiding light, a true big brother to many, and shaped countless young lives
with his selfless love.
"Once a Huynh Tru ng (Youth Leader) — a Huynh Tru ng for life."
Though in recent years a job change required Tr. Thanh to move away, making it difficult for
him to regularly participate in activities with the ng Hành chapter, he was always present
whenever the doàn needed his help or support. Even a one-way drive of over four hours could
not deter his passionate heart and desire to serve.
The Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement (TNTT) in general, and oàn TNTT ng Hành
in particular, were always his spiritual anchor — a part of his life that could never be separated.
Perhaps he loved and missed it so dearly that he decided to have the TNTT logo tattooed on his
right arm.
Aside from serving at the ng Hành chapter, Thanh actively supported other Vietnamese
community events in his hometown. His joy for service extended far beyond local boundaries.
He joined thousands of Catholic youth at several World Youth Day events, a global gathering of
young Catholic believers on pilgrimage. These journeys took him to Spain, Rome, France, and
Brazil, where he deepened his faith, served others, and caught unforgettable glimpses of two
beloved Popes: Pope Benedict and Pope Francis.
Thanh was always there for others — whether offering help, a kind word, or a ride — and he
never hesitated. He consistently put others first: skipping meals, sacrificing sleep, and choosing
the harder path just to lend a hand, even to strangers. He was always present with a warm, loving
smile. His kindness, generosity, boundless joy, and servant-hearted nature touched countless
lives.
Even in his final moments, he stayed true to that spirit — choosing to donate his organs to save
lives and bring hope:
A heart full of love.
A strong kidney.
A resilient liver.
And other precious gifts.
Most of all, a soul wide open to life.
Thanh’s love lives on — in every breath that he gave to others.
As a devoted husband and father, Thanh worked tirelessly to provide for his wife and young son.
His love for them was evident in everything he did. His loyalty to family and friends was
unwavering, and his giving spirit defined who he was.
"We only truly die when we are forgotten." And so, we believe Thanh still lives — in all of us
who were touched by his heart.
Please don’t be overcome with sadness.
Because we were all given something rare and precious — the chance to know Thanh, to be
loved by him, and to be changed by his generous spirit.
Thanh lived a life that was full — not long, but deep and wide enough to love, to give, and to
leave behind something truly eternal. His legacy as a hero and beacon of compassion will never
be forgotten.
He will be deeply missed and eternally remembered.
