Gladys H. Washington was born on July 8, 1928, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the daughter of the late Clara Washington and Joseph Hickman. She was preceded in death by her husband Philip Washington, Sr., her son Edward Washington, Sr., her sister Maxine Milton and brother James Hickman. Gladys was educated in the New Orleans public school system and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She attended Delgado Community College and completed the secretarial course. Gladys was baptized at St. John Divine Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the usher board for many years. After moving to the Ninth Ward, she placed her membership at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the usher board and was a faithful member. After Hurricane Katrina, Gladys moved to Richmond, Virginia. She lived independently for 20 years. Every day she would read God's word. She read her Bible, Daily Bread and In Touch Magazine and worked on Bible Word Searches. She shared the wisdom she gleaned by sending us "readings". She looked forward to visits from her family. Traveling to Virginia to visit her was always a joy-filled occasion. Every gathering involved her assigning someone to read something inspirational then she would give us a copy along with a bag of life-savers to take home. One of her favorite readings to share was "Perception". Gladys enjoyed listening to music and often ended dinner by listening to CeCe and singing along to "The Goodness of God", "Amazing Grace" or "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray. Sometimes she would retreat to her kitchen and close the door. When asked what she had been doing she'd say, "I was praying". Her favorite Bible verse was John 3:16 and her favorite hymn was "Amazing Grace". Gladys Hickman Washington was married to Philip Washington, Sr. and from this union was born nine children: Philip Washington, Jr. (Joan), Edward Washington Sr., Loretta Green, Emanuel Washington, Sr. (Suprenia), Marcia Washington, Anthony Washington (Gilvana), Victoria Levy, Gladys Davis (Edward) and Milton Washington (Eriko). They were also blessed with twenty-four grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Joining us who mourn her passing and will miss her dearly are many extended family members and friends. We thank God for her life of perseverance, strength and her examples of unending faith and love. Family and friends are invited to attend the Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Clarence Morse - 3320 Louisa Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70126. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Service at 10:00 a.m. Reverend Dudley Watson of Mount Sinai, officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.
