Glenn Ryder Obituary
It is with profound sadness and enduring love that we announce the passing of Glenn Charles Ryder on July 31st, 2025 in Virginia Beach. Glenn's life was a testament to kindness, exuberance and an unyielding spirit that left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Born in Portsmouth Naval Hospital on October 20th, 1961, Glenn entered this world as the beloved little brother to his two older sisters Linda Ryder Dragas and the late Nancy Ryder Harris and only son to his parents, the late Leon E. Ryder and Raydene Theresa Edgar Ryder. Known for his warm, outgoing and others-centered demeanor, Glenn was quick to make friends and never knew a stranger. Glenn attended Princess Anne High School and married his high school sweetheart, Mary Sprouse Ryder, shortly thereafter.
Glenn carried his love of connecting with others into his early professional days in the Amway Global business, quickly creating a large community of co-workers that became lifelong friends. Glenn worked hard to support his family of six, finding success in sales roles of all kinds until finally settling into an award winning career in real estate with Century 21. Glenn's clients knew he would always go the extra mile for them, no questions asked. His real estate team was like family to him and he truly loved being a part of Century 21.
Glenn's most precious and lasting legacy will be the gentle and warm love he radiated to his kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Whether he was teaching his boys how to catch the perfect wave, tossing the baseball for hours, or cheering at a 5am crew regatta, Glenn was always eager to support his four children: Brenton Glenn Ryder (Megan Durant), Barbour Dylan Ryder, Morgan Ryder Aspinwall (Jack Aspinwall) and Reagan Dolores Ryder (Alexander Gylfason).
Glenn most commonly went by the nickname "G," shortened from the name "G-Love" given to him on a surf trip by his sons and other surf buddies. G was most at home in the waves and absolutely loved the beach, particularly at sunrise on a Stand Up Paddle board. He surfed his entire life, on every type of board, and was constantly creating community with fellow surfers.
G was quick to laugh, quick to smile, and always had a humble and kind heart. He is already incredibly missed, but his family is at peace knowing that G accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and is surfing the best waves in Heaven.
A service will be held on September 13th, 2025 at Virginia Beach Community Chapel at 1pm. There will be a paddle-out on September 20th, 2025 at 10am at Croatan Beach. Those who knew and loved G are warmly invited to attend.
The family asks that in G's memory, you write a note to a loved one of yours letting them know how much they mean to you, as G was known to do. Memorial donations can be made to the Christian Surfers organization if you feel so led by clicking the Donate link below.
With much love,
The Ryder Family
