Glenn “Spike” Smies, 91, of Oostburg, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2025, at his home.
Spike was born on July 27, 1933, to Lester and Anne (Roerdink) Smies in Oostburg. He graduated from Oostburg High School in 1951. Spike started as a carpenter, when he worked for Eggebeen Builders and continued working in carpentry for many years.
He was a lifelong member of Oostburg Christian Reformed Church. Spike had a love of the Lord and his family. He enjoyed golf, cutting and burning wood. Spike loved spending his Saturday mornings at Oostburg Concrete, collecting cans and was known as the “Can Man.” Oostburg Christian School had a special place in his heart and Spike was a huge supporter and instrumental in one of the first additions added onto the school.
Spike is survived by his wife of 72 years, Donna; children, Ann (Jim) Dolfin, Wendy TenDolle, and Jack (Mandy) Smies; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Anne, and son-in-law, Steve TenDolle.
A memorial service for Spike will be held at Oostburg Christian Reformed Church on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 6:00pm. All are welcome to view a livestream of the service by visiting wenig.live/SpikeSmies
Relatives and friends may greet the family at church from 3:30pm until the time of service.
Memorials are appreciated in Spike’s name.
