Glenn Stevenson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Robertson Funeral & Cremation Service - Charlotte on Apr. 10, 2020.
Glenn Wilson Stevenson, Sr. entered the presence of his Savior in his eternal home on April 8, 2020. Glenn was born in Alabama on April 15, 1931 to Charlie Wilson and Ida Delanie Stevenson. He spent the majority of his growing up years in Detroit, Michigan, where he met his life's partner, Barbara Reddick, at a church youth meeting. They were married on August 25, 1950. Glenn accepted Christ as His Savior when he was 14, a decision which changed the direction of his life. Developing both a love for God and a love for cars, he attended GM Technical Institute and became a draftsman for Chevrolet Engineering. His career was interrupted by the military and he served in Germany during 1951-52, where Barbara was able to join him. Returning to GM, he became a senior designer, working on engine design for the Corvette.

In 1955, Glenn and Barbara began serving as lay youth leaders in the small church they attended in Detroit. The group met regularly, grew quickly, and became known as The Contenders (Jude 3). (The group still meets for bi-annual reunions.) Glenn & Barbara continued this ministry for the next 15 years, when Glenn felt that God's call on his life to serve in full-time youth work overshadowed his love for engine design. God then directed him to New Testament Baptist Church in Miami, FL. From there, he served in Kansas City, MO, again in Miami, and then Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte. At Northside, he served as Minister of Education, assistant to the Pastor, Minister of Pastoral Care, and as teacher of a large Sunday School class of young couples which he taught for almost twenty years. He was currently a member of Devonshire Baptist Church.

Glenn is survived by Barbara, his wife of 69 years; three children, Laura, Dianne and husband, David Buzzell, and Glenn Jr. and wife, Phyllis; five grandchildren, Drew (Carmen) Buzzell, Denae (Derek) Appleton, Glenn III (Katie), Nathan (Rebekah), and Aaron (Candace); one sister, Bonnie (George) Legel; great-granddaughter, Audrey Noelle; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Robertson Funeral and Cremation Service. Because of the Coronavirus, the family will have a private graveside service at Gethsemane Gardens. The service is available for livestream on Saturday, April 11, at 2 pm. Use this link to view the service: Glenn Stevenson Sr. Service. A Celebration of Life Service will be arranged at a future date. Resurrection and reunion also will follow at an undetermined date!
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Devonshire Baptist Church, 6744 View Way Drive, Charlotte, NC, 28215.

Barbara, this is Ray and Kay Mims. We have moved away from Charlotte and was just informed of Glen's home going. We were so blessed to have you both in our life during our young years. Your life, teachings and Christian values have guided many of your followers to work for Christ and enlarge the kingdom. No two people have ever impacted our life as you did. We will see Glenn again. What a wonderful day that will be. We love you Barbara

He was a blessing to so many folks during his lifetime, including myself. When I would call and ask how he was doing, his response would be Almost perfect. Well, he is now perfect and in Gods presence.

It was a joy to work with brother Stevenson until his retirement, and a real honor to follow him in some of his pastoral responsibilities at Northside Baptist Church. He was a "one of a kind" man. He exemplified what a Christian leader is to be. Everyone loved "brother". Hazel and I will be praying for the family during this difficult time. We look forward to joining him in Heaven.

Brother Glenn will be missed by so many who loved him, who had the privilege of sitting under his teaching for many years. He was such a Godly example to all of us. We are so blessed to have known him. So glad to know he is no longer suffering but is whole and with his Savior. We will see him again!
