Glenn Thomas Obituary

Glenn Alfred “The Promise” Thomas

Sunrise: October 31, 1962 – Sunset: June 2, 2025

Glenn Alfred Thomas, affectionately known as “GG” and celebrated in the boxing world as “The Promise,” was the fifth child born to the union of Franklin Thomas Sr. and Charlene Thomas. He confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at West Chestnut Street Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Garland K. Offutt.

Glenn was educated in the Jefferson County Public School system and proudly graduated from Ballard High School in 1980. After high school, he began a remarkable journey into the world of professional boxing. As a young amateur, he competed in the Golden Gloves tournaments, where his talent, discipline, and heart in the ring earned him recognition. He made his professional debut in 1984 as a lightweight and quickly gained a reputation for his skill, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

Nicknamed “The Promise,” Glenn Thomas enjoyed a boxing career that spanned more than two decades. Over the course of 37 professional fights, he achieved an impressive 29 victories, including 8 by knockout. His career stood as a testament to his resilience and dedication to the sport he loved, until stepping away from the ring when his health began to decline in 2002.

On June 2, 2025, Glenn transitioned from this life peacefully and quietly, just as he lived. He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Thomas Sr.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving mother, Charlene Thomas; his daughters, Renesha Martin and Janay Thomas (Jules Figueroa); his beloved grandchildren, Orion Marrero and Zora Figueroa; his siblings, Frank Thomas Jr. (Pat), Della Wheeler (Gary), Carey Thomas (Deria), and Darlene Thomas; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Glenn will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his quiet strength, and the unwavering promise he kept not only in the boxing ring, but in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

"For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands." – 2 Corinthians 5:1
