Gonzalo Flores Canales, Jr., a cherished husband, beloved father, grandfather, and great
grandfather, and a decorated veteran, passed away peacefully at home on July 12, 2025, at
the age of 90 in San Antonio, Texas. Born on September 12, 1934, in Sejita, Texas, Gonzalo,
affectionately known as Góne by his loved ones, led a life marked by kindness, generosity,
and courage.
Gonzalo's early life in Sejita and Benavides, Texas, laid the foundation for his strong drive
toward success and his unwavering commitment to his family and country. He answered
the call of duty and served with honor in the U.S. Air Force, where he was recognized with
the Distinguished Flying Cross twice, for his heroism during aerial flight. His family had the
pleasure of being stationed with him on bases in Dover, Delaware; Tachikawa, Japan; Clark
AFB in the Philippines; and Topeka, Kansas before settling in San Antonio, Texas when he
retired from the Air Force in 1974. As a civilian, Gonzalo was employed first, by McDonnell
Douglas and then Northrop Corp., both in Saudi Arabia. Finally, in the 90s he worked for HB
Zachary Co., as a security guard. His legacy of service continued long after his military
career, as he dedicated time to volunteering with the American Red Cross, Meals on
Wheels, and actively participating in his local Neighborhood Watch program.
Gonzalo's love for his family was immense, and he was the cornerstone upon which many
cherished memories were built. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gonzalo and
Guadalupe (Flores) Canales; his brothers, Jose and Benny Canales; his sister, Lucinda
Garza (Arnoldo Sr.); his son, Carlos Canales; and his great-grandson, Jett Elijah Baker. He is
survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Erlinda Enriquez Canales, and his loving
daughters, Alma Garza (Marcus) and Annabel Canales. Gonzalo's joy was multiplied
through his grandchildren, Matthew Baker (Alexia), Hilary Holmes (Joey), Andrea Canales,
and Jon Skow Canales (Stevie), and his great-grandchildren, Isabella Canales, Carly
Garibay, Mason Skow, Axel Baker, Willow Skow, and Hazel Holmes, who all had a close and
nurturing relationship with him. They will miss him dearly and celebrate their time with
him. Gonzalo's numerous cousins, nieces and nephews will miss his ever-present smile
and calm nature.
An active man who found pleasure in the simple joys of life, Gonzalo's summers were not
complete without the family trips to Corpus Christi, with a pitstop to eat sandwiches at the
roadside picnic area on the way. At home, he was always found tending to his yard and
maintaining his household, a testament to his belief in the value of hard work and the
satisfaction of a job well done.
Gonzalo's kindness touched the lives of many as he and Erlinda welcomed generations of
babies into their home for daycare, asking nothing in return. His generosity knew no
bounds, often giving rides home to friends of his grandchildren who had stayed too late to
walk home. His courage emanated even in his final hours with his close family repeating
the phrase, "Sejita Strong," because they just don't make them like him anymore. He was a
man of deep Catholic faith, a pillar in his community, and a shining example of a life well
lived. His story is one of love, service, and unwavering dedication to the ideals he held dear.
As we bid farewell to Gonzalo F. Canales, Jr., we celebrate a life that was full and
meaningful. His memory will continue to guide and inspire us, and his spirit will live on
through the many lives he touched. Gonzalo's journey on this earth may have ended, but
the values he instilled in us and the love he shared will endure forever.
A private Graveside will take place at a later time.
