Gordon "Gordy" Meier Obituary
At age 83, Gordon ("Gordy") Meier passed peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, February 7, 2026, just 70 days after the passing of the love of his life, Kay Meier. His family believes he died of a broken heart. Gordy leaves behind a life marked by deep love for family and friends, steadfast service, and many accomplishments.
Gordon Meier was born on August 25, 1942, in
St. Paul, Minnesota; however, he spent his childhood and early years in Fairmont, Minnesota. He began dating his high school sweetheart, Kay, and the two married in 1964, beginning a lifelong partnership defined by devotion and teamwork. Gordy attended Mankato State University (now Minnesota State University, Mankato), studying accounting before he and Kay moved to Minneapolis to build their life together. They raised two children, Heather and Gregory, and later welcomed their grandson, Brandon, Gregory's son.
Gordy's greatest loves were his family and friends, the outdoors-particularly the Superior National Forest-and his long career with General Mills.
A devoted husband and father, Gordy took great pride in providing for his family and ensuring their home was always secure, welcoming, and filled with love. Together, Gordy and Kay created a household that ran like a well-oiled machine, grounded in partnership.
Gordy was the first-person family and friends called when something needed to be built or repaired. Exceptionally intelligent, skilled, and endlessly generous with his time and knowledge, he seemed able to figure out how anything mechanical worked-and fix it. He spent countless hours working on projects at his beloved lake home outside Ely, his home in Brooklyn Park, and helping maintain his daughter's historic Minneapolis home.
An Eagle Scout and lifelong outdoorsman, Gordy shared his passion for nature with his family through camping and canoe trips to Bear Head Lake State Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where many wonderful family summers were spent. Later, Gordy and Kay realized their dream of owning a log home, purchasing land on Eagles Nest Lake #3 near Ely and building a beautiful retreat that became Gordy's favorite place on earth. Hunting, fishing, and time spent at the lake with friends ("guys weekends") were sacred traditions that allowed him to relax, recharge, and fully enjoy life.
Gordy dedicated 43 years to General Mills and had a very distinguished career. Primarily in Supply Chain roles, he genuinely loved his work, his colleagues, and the company he served so faithfully. Known as a brilliant and practical business leader, and generous mentor, Gordy traveled extensively supporting plant operations (across the globe), negotiating ingredient and packaging contracts, mentoring colleagues, and always willing to roll up his sleeves to help wherever needed. His loyalty to General Mills was legendary-even at home, only General Mills products were welcome in the pantry, much to the playful frustration of his family.
Gordy was also active in his church home, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale, and in earlier years enjoyed golfing and bowling in several leagues.
Gordy is survived by his daughter Heather (Logan Hanson) and their three terriers (whom he adored)-Augie, Lily-May, and Violet; grandson Brandon; brother Jon (Jody) Meier; and many extended family members, friends, and colleagues who were blessed to know him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kay Meier; son Gregory Meier; parents Hugh Meier and Margaret (Mair) Meier; father-in-law John Furtney and mother-in-law Elizabeth (Stade) Furtney; loved grand-dog Daisy-Belle, and dear friends Larry Popplewell and Robert (Bob) Schoknecht.
A celebration of Gordy's life will be held on Friday, February 20th, at Washburn-McReavy's Glen Haven Chapel in
Crystal, Minnesota. Family and friends who knew and loved Gordy are invited to gather to reminisce and share stories anytime from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., with a prayer service to follow at 3:00 p.m. He will be interred at the family burial plot in Fairmont, Minnesota, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Save the Boundary Waters or
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, two causes that were meaningful to Gordy.
