Grace Flood Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John F Givnish Funeral Home - Academy Rd on Apr. 10, 2025.
Grace "Lee" Flood (nee Johnson), of Northeast Philadelphia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a valiant battle with a brief illness on Sunday, March 16th, at the age of 72. The daughter of the late Grace Cunningham and the late Maurice Johnson, she was born on March 5th, 1953. She was the cherished wife of the late Charles Flood, married for 39 years before his passing in November 2018. She was the best mother that her children Charlie, Lauren (Kevin) and stepdaughter Donna (Bryan) could ever imagine or ask for. She was the proud, doting and spoiling Mom-Mom to her granddaughter Kayla and grandsons Kilito and Jack. She was the treasured sister of Elaine Vitanza (Michael) and the Late Sandy Matherly (William Edward) and the loved Aunt to Eddie, Brian (Angel), David and Eric (Andrea) Matherly, Dawn Vitanza-Baxter (Rob), Kathleen Flanagan (the late Tim), Tom Flood (Ellan), Tracy Hasson (Brian) and Kelly Thomas (Chris). She was a dear sister-in-law to Elizabeth "Bunny" Flood (the late Tom). She was also a loved cousin to Helen McCullough (Bob), Kathy Mizner (the late Rich), the late Karen Hohenstein (the late John) as well as many others among the Johnson and Flood families. Outside of her family, Lee was a special and treasured friend of countless people that she came across over the course of her life. Lee was a once-in-a-lifetime bright light in the world with a magnetism that drew others in and cared deeply for people beyond measure. She had a special ability to make everyone who came into her life, whether over the course of many years or simply for a few moments in passing, feel special. Described by many as the ultimate people person, showing kindness and care for all those that she knew and loved, there are very few people that we come across in life that have such a positive impact on the lives of others the way that Lee did. Whether it was a card for a birthday, wedding, anniversary, get well soon or sympathy card for someone, an outfit for someone's new child or grandchild or simply calling to check in on someone, you always loved when Lee reached out to you because she exemplified the qualities of all that was good in this world. Simply put, she was the best of the best and there will never be another person like her. A 1972 graduate of Lansdowne-Aldan High School, she married the love of her life, Charlie, on August 25th, 1979. Their family started with Charlie, born in 1980, and Lauren in 1982. With her children's sports and other activities, Lee, not surprisingly, became a favorite among the other parents and their children alike. A well-known neighbor and favorite of so many in the neighborhood, "Mama Flood" was like a second mother to many of her children's friends, especially Katie DeMasi and Mandy Evans. In the mid-90's, she took college credits and earned her Nurse's Aide certification and began working in the Frankford Hospital system in the TCU and later as a home health aide with the Aria and Jefferson Hospital systems, frequently requested specifically by name, by many home care patients because they had heard so much about her kindness, care and compassion. She retired in 2018 after her husband's passing and in mid-2019, had her second act at her son Charlie's office as one of the office managers where she, again not surprisingly, quickly became the most popular person there. A favorite activity of many who came to the office was getting to talk with Lee and catch up with her before their appointments with many staying afterwards to continue their conversations because she was so loved by everyone there. Family was the most important thing to Lee. Nothing was more enjoyable for her than spending time, in any capacity, with family, friends and her granddog, Nugget. An avid Eagles and Phillies fan, she also enjoyed reading a good book, watching a Hallmark channel movie, a nice cup of coffee and at times a glass of wine, listening to Motown and all good music and hitting the dance floor at parties with her radiant smile and killer moves. While she will be deeply missed by many, Lee would not want you to be sad. She would rather you remember the many good times and memories shared together that far outnumber the sad thoughts you may be thinking and feeling right now. We encourage everyone to continue the positive impact that she had on the world by showing the kindness and compassion that she showed to others and in that way, she will be carried with us all and the spirit of the once-in-a –lifetime person that she was will live on forever in all our hearts.
