Grant Schettler Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapel & Cremation Center - Murray on Dec. 11, 2025.
Grant Hampton Schettler

1941 - 2025

Grant died peacefully at home on November 29, 2025 of cancer. He was born to Paul D. Schettler and Aurelia Hampton Schettler in 1941.

He attended East High School, Dartmouth University and graduated from the University of Utah. He worked as a Certified Public Accountant and later received his J.D. at the University of Utah Law School. Specializing in Taxation Law, he continued to work for Coopers and Lybrand accounting firm in Salt Lake City and later in Sacramento, CA and San Francisco, CA. He was also especially proud of the work he did to create and direct a free tax clinic benefitting low-income clients at the Homeless Prenatal Program in San Francisco.

Grant moved back to Salt Lake City in 1991 and, with partners, opened Red Rock Brewing Co. and helped start and manage other business ventures.

Throughout his career, he volunteered for several philanthropies, including Valley Behavioral Health, Utah Symphony and Opera, Red Butte Garden, and Edgewood Children's Center (Bay Area) where he was generous with time and resources.

A life-long learner, Grant had a broad spectrum of intellectual and creative interests in the U of U School of Continuing Education programs, music, art, theater and dance. He studied and loved talking about theology, philosophy, and wellness/health practices, and was a great DIY tinkerer and problem-solver. His love for nature and the outdoors were expressed in his passion for gardening, aquaculture, fly fishing, hiking, skiing and his devotion to the family cabin in Island Park, Idaho.

In his final years, Grant pursued his new found passion in ballroom dancing with the Arthur Murray Dance Program in Salt Lake City and beyond.

Grant is pre-deceased by sisters Catharine and Mary and is survived by his brother Paul (Karen) and sister Susan. He leaves special friend Susan Loffler, son Jeff Schettler (Flery), and daughters Jill Schettler-Susskind (Marc) and Lori Schettler (Mark). He also leaves grandchildren, Shayne Schettler (Taylor), Jonah and Maizy Susskind and two great-grandchildren, Jeffrey David and Ellis.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Chris Gay, Becky Bell, and the kind staff at Interim Health Care and Applegate Hospice.

A gathering to honor and celebrate Grant's life will be held at a future date. Donations to your favorite charity are encouraged.
