Mr. Grant Evans Thayer, age 78, of Dobson, NC, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. He was born December 4, 1945, in Sanilac County, Michigan, to the late Cletus Thayer and the late Justine Trigger Thayer Abbott. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rex Thayer.
Left to cherish is memories are his loving wife, Nelta Hiatt Thayer; his children, Lisa Thayer Seeborg (Ryan), Joshua Rex Thayer (Jessica); his bonus children, Vickie Mounce Ramey (Tim), and Beckie Mounce Sebastian (Scott); grandchildren, Camden Seeborg, Dylan Seeborg, Chloe Seeborg, Cassi Thayer, Scarlette Thayer, Garrett Draughn (Anna). Elliott Draughn, Ammen Mounce, TJ Ramey (Caitlin), Tess Ramey, Jordan Sebastian, Emily Sebastian, his siblings, Joy Koester (Gary), Nancy Mino (Keith), Elmer “Red” Thayer, Marsha Kosal (Ed), James “Jim” Thayer (Julie), and William “Bill” Thayer.
Mr. Thayer was a servant of God, country, family, and church, having served as a Deacon and an Adult Sunday School teacher at Crossroads Baptist Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam era. He was Adjutant and Quartermaster for VFW Post 2019, Chairman of the Surry County Veterans Council, was past Commandant for The Marine Corp League, where he was involved in the Toys for Tots Program. Grant also had a long career in residential and corporate security systems, having worked for Wells Fargo, Guardian, and finally retiring from Radar Security. After his retirement he then worked as a substitute teacher for Surry County schools, Army JROTC instructor at East Surry High School, and was a Boy Scout leader.
Visitation for Mr. Thayer will be Saturday, January 13, 2024, from 1:00-2:00 PM at Crossroads Baptist Church. A celebration of his life will begin at 2:00 PM, in the church with Rev. Jeff Wall and Rev. Arlis Thomas officiating. Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436 will follow in the Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Kindred Hospital of Greensboro for the care shown to their family during this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, or The Marine Corp League’s Toys for Tots program. Moody-Davis Funeral Service in serving the Thayer family.
