Gregory Charles Neuweiler, affectionately known as "Newy" or "Nu," passed away on August 15, 2025, in Sparks, Nevada. Born on December 23, 1947, at Saint Mary's Hospital in Reno, he was the first child of Herman "Dutch" and Maralyn (Gray) Neuweiler.
Greg's early years were rooted in the Reno community. He attended Mount Rose Elementary School, B. D. Billinghurst Junior High, and Wooster High School before going on to earn a degree in Finance from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1979. Notably, he was the first male to graduate with Honors in his field. During his time at UNR, Greg served as the 1978–79 president of the Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN), gaining valuable experience working with university regents and local and state political offices. He later pursued legal studies at McGeorge University Law School.
Greg dedicated over three decades of his professional life to Sierra Pacific Power Company, where he held a variety of roles including Rod and Chainman, Draftsman, Supervisor of Reno Electric, Lands and Right of Way, and Major Accounts Manager for Mining. His leadership and innovative spirit led him to create policies and procedures for newly established positions within the company. After taking early retirement in 1996, he shifted his focus to nonprofit work, becoming Executive Director of the Downtown Reno Improvement Association. He also served for many years on the Supervisory Committee for the Sierra Pacific Federal Credit Union.
Following the 1998 general election, Greg joined several community leaders to form a Blue-Ribbon Task Force aimed at addressing issues related to election procedures and recounts. The committee issued nineteen recommendations-all adopted by the Washoe County Commission-including the creation of an Election Certification Board. Greg chaired this board through twenty elections.
In 2004, Greg renewed his real estate license and worked as a Commercial Realtor. He also played an active role in Business Networking International (BNI) and served as a judge for Trial Sciences mock jury civil trials-an experience he thoroughly enjoyed.
Greg faced physical challenges after contracting polio at age five but met them with resilience and humor. Known for his quick wit and self-deprecating jokes-especially his beloved persona "The Tool"-he used laughter as a bridge to connect with others. His compassion extended deeply into his personal life; he lovingly cared for his grandmother Lura Jensen McBean until her passing in 1989.
Greg is survived by his wife, Karen; half-sister Nancy Thomas; children Jeffery Neuweiler and Michael Ransohoff (Lucy); grandchildren Katherine and Dutch Neuweiler, and Jett Ransohoff; step-grandchildren Stone, Fisher, Roman, and Tulip Heimburger; as well as four cherished cats-Madison, Olive, K-Love, and Oreo-and countless friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Maralyn Neuweiler; grandmother Lura Jensen McBean; brothers Charles Neuweiler and Dr. Gray Neuweiler (Susan); and sister Heidi.
A celebration of Greg's life will be held on Wednesday, September 10 at 1:00PM at the Reno 597 Elks Lodge, located at 597 Kumle Lane in Reno. A private burial will take place earlier that day at Mountain View Cemetery.
