Gregory Stanley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home on Feb. 9, 2026.
Gregory M. Stanley of Evanston, was born January 13, 1956, in Elkhart, Indiana to James and Barbara Stanley and passed away February 8, 2026. He was the loving brother of Jeffrey (Leann) Stanley of Elkhart, IN, Pamela (John) Paege of Osceola, IN and the late Bret Stanley; cherished uncle of Kaitlin and Emily Paege of Osceola, James (Christina) Stanley of Stafford, VA and Dr. Jennifer (Dr. Ryan) Plichta of Raleigh, NC; proud great uncle of Christian, Noah, Nathaniel and Aaron Stanley and Kathleen and Victoria Plichta.

Greg was a 1974 graduate of Memorial High School in Elkhart, Indiana, where he was a standout multi-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball, baseball, track, and tennis. He held the school's shot put record for many years and was later inducted into the Elkhart Sports Hall of Fame. In 1973, Greg was honored as a member of the Indiana All-Star Football Team.

Following high school, Greg earned a full athletic scholarship to Northwestern University, where he played middle linebacker for the Wildcats. He received his bachelor's degree from Northwestern in 1978 and went on to earn a master's degree from DePaul University in 1983.

Greg built a successful career in information technology, beginning as a systems analyst at Continental Bank. He also held positions with Montgomery Ward and Axiom, ultimately concluding his professional career as a Senior Systems Technical Analyst at TransUnion.

Greg loved sports throughout his life, both as a participant and an avid fan. He especially enjoyed riding his bicycle as a way to explore and experience the city around him. Greg was known for his generosity and willingness to help others whenever he could. He took particular joy in spending time with his nieces and nephews, who were truly his pride and joy.

Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UNICEF.

Yesterday

Greg and I lived in the same condo building in Evanston. My understanding is that he was one of a number of long term residents. In contrast, I became a resident in 2023. This is a quiet building and Greg was apparently one of the quieter residents as we encountered each other infrequently. When our paths did cross, he was always pleasant but engaged only briefly. There was one encounter, however, that stood out. I was struggling to get two very large and moderately heavy boxes that had been delivered for me into the elevator to bring them up to my unit. Greg saw me struggling and, despite his obvious mobility difficulties, insisted on assisting me despite my expressed concerns for his well-being. After much effort, we succeeded in getting the items into the elevator and into my unit. Whew! Greg seemed pleased with being able to help and I was certainly grateful! I will think of him every time I sit in one of those chairs. May you rest in peace, Greg. My condolences to your family.

P.S. Since this encounter, I have learned that there is a hand truck stored in the garage that would have made the job a lot easier!
