Gretchen Lageson Whitcomb, age 94, passed away on December 21, 2025. She was born in Owatonna, MN to the late Benedict and Meta (Warnecke) Lageson on August 16, 1931. On July 31, 1954, she married Robert Thom Whitcomb and they had three children. They shared 48 years together at the time of his passing.
Gretchen was primarily a homemaker during the growing up years for her children. She truly was the manager of the home and was a good cook. She was hands on at home as well and enjoyed minor remodeling and décor projects. When Scott left the house, she went to work for a local architect as a secretary. She loved Robert very much, was his greatest cheerleader and support. She also had many wonderful friends throughout her life.
Gretchen had a passion for India and its culture. She especially loved elephants and she had a remarkable collection. She also enjoyed Pandas. She was known for providing support for animal welfare and care organizations. She loved to read books and participated for many years in a book club. More recently she enjoyed weekly bingo games at The Heritage.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Whitcomb, her son Scott (Alexis) Luxor; daughter-in-law Anh Whitcomb; grandchildren: Courtney and Matthew, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her son Steven Whitcomb, her parents, as well as Robert’s parents.
At Gretchen’s request, an informal celebration of her life will take place on Sunday December 28, 2025, from 11:15am until 1:00pm, at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 803 E College Ave, Appleton. Gretchen will be interred at Riverside Cemetery, Appleton.
