Guido J. Ciannavei, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, at his home in Norwood, Massachusetts. Born at his family home in Walpole, Massachusetts on February 8, 1934, he was the son of John and Francesca (Cacciatori) Ciannavei. Guido was raised in Walpole and graduated with the class of 1953.
On May 19, 1954, Guido proudly enlisted in the United States Army, reporting for training in New Jersey. After basic training he entered artillery communications training and then radio operations training in preparation to serve overseas. In 1955, while home from training Guido met Maureen Mayo at the Echo Inn in Walpole. They pair were instantly smitten with each other, and when Guido returned to New Jersey for his Army training, they remained in contact, writing letters to each other regularly and patiently waiting to see each other again. Guido was deployed to Germany, where he helped with stabilization after the ending of the Korean War, lending his skills as a sharpshooter. Guido was honorably discharged on May 18, 1956, as a Specialist 3.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, Guido returned to Walpole and began working at Honeywell and Digital. Knowing that Maureen was the love of his life, Guido proposed, and on January 18, 1957, the pair wed in Saint John's Church in Canton, Massachusetts. The young couple made their married home in Walpole, where they would raise a family.
Guido's career at Honeywell and Digital was a successful one, with Guido rising in the ranks to become a plant manager. His job came with a lot of responsibility, overseeing the production of more than 2,000 people. Guido was a hardworking and resolute man, which reflected in his work, and was recognized when he was asked to open new plants for the company in both Franklin and Maynard. He remained a loyal employee until his retirement in 1989.
In his retirement, Guido occupied himself by volunteering and working for Boston Catholic Television in Boston and Watertown, Massachusetts. He would regularly make his way to the Mission Church where he would help tape the various programs, running the cassettes to the studios to be broadcast. Guido also helped to organize and facilitate pilgrimages to Medjugorje, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, visiting multiple times himself.
In his free time, Guido enjoyed being with his family. One place he loved to spend time with his family was at their vacation home in the Hamilton Beach area of Wareham, Massachusetts. Most summers, and many a weekend in the winter, were spent enjoying the family beach house, relaxing while watching the waves or hoping to get a bite while out fishing on the ocean. Guido also loved to share his passion for sports with his family. He was a season ticket holder at Schaefer Stadium in Foxborough for almost two decades and he loved to catch a Patriots game with his family and friends. At home, Guido would gather the kids, and later grandkids, to join him to watch the different Boston sports teams play, talking about favorite players and chances of winning against rival teams. In addition to watching sports, Guido enjoyed keeping active himself. He was voted "Most Athletic" in High School, regularly ran five miles a day well into his 40's, and when he began to slow down, would often wake up early to walk the malls with his beloved wife.
Guido will be remembered as a driven and determined man, who excelled at whatever he put his mind to. He had high standards and demanded the best from those around him, while leading by example. These qualities lead to many strong values that his children carry on as part of his legacy.
