Gwendolyn Patin Houston
February 16, 1930 - September 14, 2025
Lafayette: Gwendolyn Patin Houston, beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the community, lived a full and beautiful life during her 95 years before passing peacefully on September 14th.
Born in
Lafayette, Louisiana, to Lydia and Oscar Patin, Sr., Gwendolyn distinguished herself early- graduating as valedictorian from Paul Breaux High School at just 16. She pursued higher education at Rhodes College in New York City before returning home, where she began her career at Standard Insurance Company and later married Louis M. Houston. Together, Gwendolyn and Louis built a legacy of entrepreneurship and service, owning and operating Houston's Café and Sunnyside Lunch Counter & Laundromat for more than 40 years.
Their businesses became beloved community fixtures, celebrated for delicious food, warm hospitality, and lasting memories. Known for her razor-sharp wit, keen sense of humor, strong intellect, profound kindness, and no-nonsense spirit, Gwendolyn was a devoted mother and grandmother who nurtured her family with strength and wisdom.
Education remained one of her deepest convictions-instilling a love of learning in her children and staying actively involved in their schooling and activities. Traveling to visit the many places her children lived brought her joy, as did meeting new people and making lasting friendships wherever she went. Her Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. A dedicated parishioner, she attended daily Mass for many years and participated fully in her church communities. That deep spirituality sustained her through life's challenges and inspired all who knew her.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Louis, and her siblings Oscar, Dolores, Jewell, and Errol.
Gwendolyn is survived by her children-Dr. Louis M. Houston, Dominique Lueckenhoff, and Gwen Michelle Houston-and her grandson, George Maxwell Lueckenhoff, along with many nieces and nephews who adored her.
Gwendolyn was a true original-fiercely independent, deeply loving, and unapologetically herself. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
A private Mass and memorial service will be held at a later date. Kinchen Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements - see website for updates.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Little Sisters of the Poor or to the Mother Teresa Missionary Sisters of Charity Convent, 904 Jack St,
